Every time I run a backup I get the error message "Can't back up Removable Storage Manager, error -1101 (file/directory not found)". I'm using the latest version of EMC retrospect Pro and 32 bit Vista Ultimate. Any ideas why and adverse effects of this????? Anybody know a fix?

Here's what the event log has to say about it:

I'm using Professional version 7.5.387

Driver update and Hotfix, version 7.5.11.100

Any ideas on how to fix this and what the downside of not fixing it is?

THANX!

Chuck

Is this happening on a machine that was upgraded to Vista?

Try turning on the Removable Storage Manager:

Control Panel > Programs

Turn Windows Features on or off

Select the check box next to Removable Storage Management to turn the feature on

OK

- Try the backup again.

Under Services, it shows as Name - Ntmssvc, State - Stopped, Start Mode - Manual, Service Type - Share Process, Path - C;\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k rsmsvcs, Error Control - Normal, Start Name - LocalSystem, and TagID - 0.

I must also add that, on my first reply of 13/7/07, I was not looking in the right place for the services, so I don't know whether Removable Storage Manager was there, or not. My apologies.

  • 3 weeks later...

I got this error on Windows XP, service pack 2. This error started after I did a full restore from backup media, using Retrospect. Before that, I did not encounter this error.

After this error started, I "fiddled around" with Microsoft's command line interface to RSM. In other words, I opened a DOS box and used the command line "rsm." I don't know if Vista has this command though.

I don't remember exactly what I did, I think I used these commands

rsm

rsm view

rsm view /TDRIVE

rsm view /TPHYSICAL_MEDIA

After this "fiddling around," my next two Retrospect backup jobs completed without the RSM error message. This might be coincidence; I have read reports of this error wherein the symptoms vanished automagically.
