creagin
Every time I run a backup I get the error message "Can't back up Removable Storage Manager, error -1101 (file/directory not found)". I'm using the latest version of EMC retrospect Pro and 32 bit Vista Ultimate. Any ideas why and adverse effects of this????? Anybody know a fix? Mayoff
This error is coming directly from Windows. Check the Windows Event log for additional error information, which may help with troubleshooting. Everyone says "I'm using the latest version" and usually they are not. What version are you using? creagin
Here's what the event log has to say about it: - <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> - <System> <Provider Name="Retrospect" /> <EventID Qualifiers="49154">1</EventID> <Level>2</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2007-07-01T09:06:39.000Z" /> <EventRecordID>26927</EventRecordID> <Channel>Application</Channel> <Computer>ChuckReagin</Computer> <Security UserID="S-1-5-18" /> </System> - <EventData> <Data>Can't back up Removable Storage Manager, error -1101 (file/directory not found)</Data> </EventData> </Event> I'm using Professional version 7.5.387 Driver update and Hotfix, version 7.5.11.100 Any ideas on how to fix this and what the downside of not fixing it is? Mike.Turner
I am also having this problem, since moving to Vista. Is there any news?
AmyJ
What is the status of the Removable Storage Manger service?
Mike.Turner
I'm sorry - I can't find any trace of the service - or the file that Retrospect is attempting to backup.
AmyJ
Is this happening on a machine that was upgraded to Vista? Try turning on the Removable Storage Manager: Control Panel > Programs Turn Windows Features on or off Select the check box next to Removable Storage Management to turn the feature on OK - Try the backup again. Mike.Turner
Yes - this is happening on a machine that was upgraded to Vista. I tried turning on Removable Storage Manager, as you suggested, but I still get the error.
AmyJ
After turning it on what is the status under Services?
Mike.Turner
Under Services, it shows as Name - Ntmssvc, State - Stopped, Start Mode - Manual, Service Type - Share Process, Path - C;\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k rsmsvcs, Error Control - Normal, Start Name - LocalSystem, and TagID - 0. I must also add that, on my first reply of 13/7/07, I was not looking in the right place for the services, so I don't know whether Removable Storage Manager was there, or not. My apologies. AmyJ
What OS did you upgrade from? We were not able to reproduce the problem upgrading from Windows XP x86 to Vista x86. It sounds like the RSM may be damaged. There may be a way to rebuild / repair it.
arnstein
I got this error on Windows XP, service pack 2. This error started after I did a full restore from backup media, using Retrospect. Before that, I did not encounter this error. After this error started, I "fiddled around" with Microsoft's command line interface to RSM. In other words, I opened a DOS box and used the command line "rsm." I don't know if Vista has this command though. I don't remember exactly what I did, I think I used these commands rsm rsm view rsm view /TDRIVE rsm view /TPHYSICAL_MEDIA After this "fiddling around," my next two Retrospect backup jobs completed without the RSM error message. This might be coincidence; I have read reports of this error wherein the symptoms vanished automagically.
Mike.Turner
I upgraded from XP SP2.
Mike.Turner
David, I tried your suggestion, and it worked! I have now run two backups, without the error. Thank you for your help. Mike Turner.

Mike.Turner
Martin, It was David's suggestion to play around with rsm in a Dos box. Mike.
