error 206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, ect.)

Recommended Posts

I am running Retrospect 4.0 on a G4 tower with OS 9.0.4 and just replaced my Sony SDT-7000 in an APS external case with a SDT-9000 and am now getting quite a few 206 errors during backup. This is the first backup I have attempted since the replacement and have received 3 so far without completing the backup.

Nothing else is new.

Any ideas why?

Thanks,

Pete

Have you tried different media? (you say nothing else is new - try a new tape - they do wear out).

Have you run the Sony tape diagnostic?

Have you tried a cleanng cartridge?

Have you tried updating Retrospect to 4.2 or 4.3? That's a pretty old version you are running.

Have you tried updating Mac OS to 9.1?

The older Retrospect updates are here:

I have been using brand new tapes, appending to the backup.

Sony is not offering the tape diagnostic program for OS 9.

Ran a cleaning cartridge a few times. Brand new drive shouldn't need cleaning?

Don't want to update Retrospect or the OS right now.

I found this other post that makes me think I have a SCSI issue:

Have you checked the firmware version on your SDT-9000? When we purchased a Sony DAT a while back, it had out of date firmware when received.

See:

SDT-9000 support page

It might not be a bad idea to try the Sony diagnostic on a supported machine (Windows or OS X). You might have a bad drive.

I assume you've got all the right cables, terminators, etc.
