Chief
W2K, Retrospect Workgroup 5.15 I'm attempting to backup these MSSQL files and have been getting the dreaded 1020 sharing violation (also on a W2K machine). Per the database instructions on how to backup their data, the SQL server is shut down via a scheduled task. The Retrospect backup occurs during the shutdown period and the SQL server starts again. There is a 6 hour period of time the system is down. --------------------------------------log snipit------------------------------------------------------------------------- - 10/4/2002 11:56:37 PM: Copying Data on JUNGLELAND 10/4/2002 11:56:37 PM: Connected to JUNGLELAND File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\master.mdf": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\mastlog.ldf": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\model.mdf": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\modellog.ldf": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\msdbdata.mdf": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\msdblog.ldf": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\NPSSQLSYS_log.LDF": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\NpsSQlSys.mdf": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\ProSSA.mdf": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\ProSSA_log.LDF": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\RMSCPro.mdf": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\RMSCPro_log.LDF": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\tempdb.mdf": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQLNPS_PRO\Data\templog.ldf": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) 10/5/2002 12:10:14 AM: Snapshot stored, 9 KB 10/5/2002 12:13:24 AM: Comparing Data on JUNGLELAND 10/5/2002 12:13:49 AM: 14 execution errors Completed: 2 files, 17.8 MB Performance: 14.6 MB/minute (7.7 copy, 133.0 compare) Duration: 00:17:12 (00:14:45 idle/loading/preparing) 10/5/2002 12:13:54 AM: 14 execution errors Total performance: 27.5 MB/minute Total duration: 02:13:48 (01:49:31 idle/loading/preparing) What is going on here??? -Chief
AmyJ
These tips may be helpful when backing up an SQL database with Retrospect for Windows 5.6 and earlier. Step 1) save a "clone" of your SQL database. --What you're after is an empty copy with all the fields in their appropriate states and with their relationships already defined. Keep that easily accessible to your backup server. Step 2) Schedule regular static exports of your SQL data to a tab or comma-delimited file. (A SQL 2000 function) Make sure Retrospect can access that data. Step 3) Schedule regular backups with Retrospect of that export and of the "clone" data or the entire volume on which it resides. In case of emergency, retrieve the data and clone with Retrospect and import the most current data into your cloned copy. Retrospect 6.0 and later offers an Open File Backup addon for the Single Server and Multi Server editions. This will allow for a backup of the live SQL databases.
