winerr 86, error -1017

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Most of the time I have no problems with my backups but often the following errors fill my backup log:

TVol::GetInfo: UGetVolumeInformation failed, M:\, winerr 86, error -1017

TVol::openAsNtDevice: CreateFile failed, M:\, winerr 86, error -1017

I have 2 x W2K servers where one runs Retrospect and the other has a Retrospect client. The software is up to date and both servers have the latest updates etc. The client server has dual PIII 500s, a dual Intel network card and a fast SCSI RAID 5 config. The Retrospect server has a single network card and a 20GB IDE drive. This problem hasn't always occurred. It began soon after we upgraded from NT4.

Performance is pretty poor compared to the Mac servers running in our site. At best I get 50 to 60MB per minute.

Is this some sort of driver problem or timeout issue? Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks.

These errors appear to be Microsoft Windows networking errors. Can you check your scripts and confirm that you are backing up this machine (with the M: drive) via the client and not through Windows Networking?

You can also go to Configure > Volumes. Is this machine (the one getting the error in the log) listed under 'Local Desktop', 'Network Clients' or both?

I realize this is an old post, but I have the same problem, and a possible answer? (Not a good answer, though)

Retrospect 5.6.132 on Win2K Pro SP3...

TVol::openAsNtDevice: CreateFile failed, T:\, winerr 86, error -1017

TVol::GetInfo: UGetVolumeInformation failed, T:\, winerr 86, error -1017

TVol::openAsNtDevice: CreateFile failed, V:\, winerr 86, error -1017

TVol::GetInfo: UGetVolumeInformation failed, V:\, winerr 86, error -1017

TVol::openAsNtDevice: CreateFile failed, Y:\, winerr 86, error -1017

TVol::GetInfo: UGetVolumeInformation failed, Y:\, winerr 86, error -1017

TVol::openAsNtDevice: CreateFile failed, Z:\, winerr 86, error -1017

TVol::GetInfo: UGetVolumeInformation failed, Z:\, winerr 86, error -1017

These are infesting my log. They do NOT show up in Configure Volumes. They are mapped drives to a Netware server, and the Retro server is using the Microsoft built-in Client for Netware. Is this the problem? Will using the Novell Netware Client solve my problem? Is there a way of making Retrospect ignore mapped network drives? (Especially ones that aren't recognized by Configure/Volumes!)

I may repost this as a new thread if I don't hear something soon.

PS How do I get to the secret prefs again?
