Two copies of Retrospect running?

Recommended Posts

Somehow or other, I often seem to end up with two copies of Retrospect running. They seem to be the same version (e.g. not a copy of 6.0 and a copy of 6.1) and they appear side by side on the dock.

It's a little hard to tell why this might be. I checked the /Library/StartupItems folder and it has a RetroRun folder, but only one, not two. I also check in my account under Login Items and do not see any Retrospect items in there.

Where else could a second instance of Retrospect be started from? Any ideas?

This is a known bug that was supposedly fixed in v6.1.126. However, some users still report the problem (see thread Two 6.1.126 Apps Running Simultaneously, running Tiger).

Luckily, we have not had this problem since the latest update. Prior to that, though, the only way we could be sure to avoid it was by keeping Retrospect running all the time and not allowing it to autolaunch.

It still does happen on my Mac (G4 DP 533)

but it is less often than before (earlier versions)

What I noticed is: hwne it happens it is when I log in at about the same moment as Retrospect starts (whith no one logged)

Maybe this is why, so I let Retrospect run before I log-in as the admin user

I have no other tentative explanation

This is a problem I have experienced and have tried every remedy suggested to no avail. Check out:

http://forums.dantz.com/ubbthreads/favlinker.php?Cat=0&Entry=7649&F_Board=Retro6&Thread=62037&partnumber=&postmarker=

This only happens to me on a restart. When the second app starts I simply force quit it in the Dock. Subsequent scheduled backups usually only happen with a single app running.

The string above was back in October - still awaiting a solution from Dantz.

Good luck!

Despite the update, which I see is supposed to fix the problem, I'm still having problems with two copies of the Retrospect running. This often causes the 'catalogue locked' error. Force-quitting one of the applications works, sometimes, but then you have no idea which scripts have run successfully. When are Dantz going to get their act together?

Hi, I also have this problem. Here's what I know:

Retrospect 6.1.126, OSX 10.4.5 with all updates applied.

My machine is a G4 (sawtooth) desktop, and I keep it shutdown when I'm not using it (rural power can be flakey), so it get's rebooted at least daily. I run fix permissions on a regular basis.

Two copies of RetroRun are active, and when a backup script gets triggered, two Retrospect processes run (two icons in the dock), both running from the same application file. Both applications attempt to run the same script, and one get's a catalog locked error.

When a backup isn't running,

% ps axu|grep -i retro

produces the following:

root 190 0.0 0.0 28592 148 ?? Ss 8:47AM 0:01.16 /Library/StartupItems/RetroRun/RetroRun start

root 292 0.0 0.2 28592 516 ?? Ss 8:49AM 0:01.13 /Library/StartupItems/RetroRun/RetroRun

root 293 0.0 0.2 28592 516 ?? Ss 8:49AM 0:01.00 /Library/StartupItems/RetroRun/RetroRun

I also have some duplicate (not backup) scripts, to duplicate a few key folders as a lightweight alternative to running a full disk backup. (I run the backups once a week, and the duplicate's daily.) When the duplicate scripts run, there's no catalog contention, and the folders get backed up twice, concurrently, once by each application. I get two copies of Retrospect regardless of whether the script is a backup or duplicate, and regardless of whether the script is ready to run when I boot up, or whether it becomes ready while I'm already logged in.

I'd really like to see a fix to this problem.

This is the first report of multiple instances of retrorun being alive at the same time.

The process #190 information is extra odd; I wonder what "start" means at the end of the path.

Processes #292 and 293 show the correct path as it should, but on my machine there is only one PID for retororun.

> Retrospect 6.1.126, OSX 10.4.5 with all updates applied

Since the internet lives forever, it's generally most helpful to provide version information in the post, so others who are trying to help don't have to cross-reference release dates against post dates (and then just guess or assume that it's accurate). What's missing from your report is the version of the Retrospect Device Update (RDU) file that's loading with the program.

I'd suggest trashing the /Library/StartupItems/RetroRun/ folder, launching and quitting Retrospect, and then restarting. Then run your ps string again from the Terminal, and see if you get the same results.

RDU version is 6.1.3.101

I've trashed the /Library/StartupItems/RetroRun/ folder before, and the problem went away, then came back.

And does a list of active processes again show three unique PID's for retrorun?

Here's what I see now:

root 109 0.0 0.1 27804 192 ?? Ss 4:25PM 0:00.16 /Applications/Retrospect 6.1/Retrospect/Contents/MacOS/RetroRunSL.app/Contents/MacOS/RetroRunSL -psn_0_

root 188 0.0 0.1 28592 164 ?? Ss 4:25PM 0:00.71 /Library/StartupItems/RetroRun/RetroRun start

As of the last time it ran (a duplicate job, last night), I didn't see two copies of Retrospect running. I'll post again if the problem recurs.

Well, it didn't take long. This evening the two copies were back. During execution, it looked like this:

root 272 22.7 4.3 128152 14128 ?? R 7:21PM 0:12.26 /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Support/LaunchCFMApp /Applications/Retrospect 6.1/Retrospect/Contents/MacOS/Retrospect

root 283 13.3 4.2 153012 13732 ?? U 7:22PM 0:11.17 /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Support/LaunchCFMApp /Applications/Retrospect 6.1/Retrospect/Contents/MacOS/Retrospect

root 314 0.2 0.2 28588 504 ?? Ss 7:22PM 0:00.01 /Library/StartupItems/RetroRun/RetroRun

After it finished, it looked like this:

root 314 0.0 0.2 28592 644 ?? Ss 7:22PM 0:00.08 /Library/StartupItems/RetroRun/RetroRun

Possibly worth noting: Last night (when things went like they should), I was already logged in when the backup started. Tonight, the backup was already due to start when I booted and (immediately) logged in.

Since this is a community Forum, perhaps you could make the effort to actually provide some specific information relating to your setup and experiences?

For example, the post directly above yours says:

"Possibly worth noting: Last night (when things went like they should), I was already logged in when the backup started. Tonight, the backup was already due to start when I booted and (immediately) logged in"

Does George's note have any similarity to what's happening to you?

I'm sure they will be happy to do that if you can provide them with clear step-by-step instructions that shows the error on ANY hardware setup, not just on your single setup.

Okay, here's another data point (ref my earlier message of 3/12). This evening, I booted up and logged in. My nightly duplicate run was ready to run at the time I booted, but it didn't get started until after I had logged in. This time, I only saw one copy of Retrospect in the dock. After the run was completed, I brought up a terminal session, and grep'd for Retrospect processes, and here's what I got back:

% ps auxww|grep -i retro

root 207 0.0 0.0 28576 148 ?? Ss 7:50PM 0:00.08 /Library/StartupItems/RetroRun/RetroRun start

root 286 0.0 0.2 28576 620 ?? Ss 7:51PM 0:00.06 /Library/StartupItems/RetroRun/RetroRun

root 287 0.0 0.2 28576 616 ?? Ss 7:51PM 0:00.05 /Library/StartupItems/RetroRun/RetroRun

FWIW, I still sometimes see two copies of Retrospect trying to perform a backup, and sometimes only one. I have no idea what's different between when there are two copies or one.

BTW, I'm now running OS X 10.4.6, otherwise no changes in configuration.

I too have been experiencing this issue. Here's my info:

PowerMac G4 (Digital Audio) 533 Dual Processor

Mac OS X 10.3.9

Retrospect Desktop 6.1.126

RDU 6.1.5.102

I do not have Retrospect version 6 installed anywhere on any connected drives. There is no Retrospect icon in my trash.

Retrospect is scheduled to do a regular backup at 4 AM, and it also runs a backup server for two other computers on the network. All backups are done to file on an external firewire drive. I shut down the backup server, quit Retrospect, and restart the computer before I go to bed each night. I wake up in the morning, and two copies of the program are running, with two icons in the dock. Clicking on each icon and choosing Show In Finder confirms that they are both running from the same application file, located in the default location inside the Retrospect 6.1 folder in the main Applications folder. Here is what I see in the Activity Monitor when I search for "retro":

441 Retrospect root 1.00 4 13.13 MB 151.97 MB

438 Retrospect root 0.50 4 14.47 MB 129.76 MB

463 RetroRun root 0.00 1 820.00 KB 27.99 MB

When I shut down Retrospect altogether, I see only the one RetroRun process running.

Here's what the Operations Log looks like from the time Retrospect automatically launches about an hour after my restart:

I keep getting this as well. I'm running Retrospect 6.1.126 with RDU 6.1.5.102 under OS X 10.4.6 on the original 17" aluminum PowerBook G4. I'm backing up to external FW hard drive. Just saw it a few minutes ago. I think it only happens for me after a reboot as well. Here is the most recent sequence of events:

1. Installed QuickTime 7.1 and Security Update 2006-003 (PowerPC) 1.0 via Software Update.

2. Rebooted as required by SWU.

3. Logged in as usual.

4. About an hour later, when my Backup Server Script was due to back up, Retrospect auto-launched.

5. Retrospect quit bouncing in the Dock, and I thought the problem was not going to appear. Then, a few seconds later, another Retrospect began bouncing.

6. I looked in Activity Monitor and had two Retrospect processes and two RetroRun processes. The parent of all four was launchd(1).

7. I quit the second copy of Retrospect, as the first had already begun backing up. There were still two RetroRun processes active.

8. I quit the other Retrospect process. There were still two RetroRun processes. After launching Retrospect again, finally one of the two RetroRun processes terminated.

I do have my hard drive cloned to external FW hard drives, so I have multiple copies of Retrospect on external drives, but the two copies that were running both pointed to the same executable on my internal HD. Will try to do some more troubleshooting to gather more info.

Just did the same thing, with a few differences:

1. Reboot

2. Login and look at Activity Monitor. This time there is one RetroRun and one RetroRunSL process.

3. Retrospect auto-launches some time later. Now there are two Retrospect processes and one RetroRun process. The RetroRunSL process has disappeared.

4. I get a popup from one of the two redundant Retrospect processes saying something about a backup failure possibly due to a power outage. The other process is dutifully backing up one of my network clients.

5. After quitting the redundant process, all seems back to normal.

hello all,

has anybody in this thread ever tried rebuilding OS X's 'Launch Services Database'? i was reading about some problems it solved here:

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031215144430486

and i found a prebuilt AppleScript that will do it for you here:

http://scriptbuilders.net/files/rebuildlaunchservicesdatabase1.0.html

does this help anybody?
