pt44
I upgraded to 10.4.1 this morning. Retrospect was working fine with 10.4 (6.0.212) Now 3 times today I've found a crash report (Retro has crashed - during its Backup Server period). For no apparent reason. May not be linked to the 10.4.1 update, but seems likely. Anyone had a similar problem (or even better has a solution)
natew
Hi Was a backup running when the crash occured or was the backup server polling clients? What is your backup device? Thanks nate
pt44
Dont' know. I wasn't in front of my mac any of the times it crashed. Just came back to find it crashed. I do have a feeling though that it had (on all occasions), polled one of my powerbooks and started to either count files or actually backup. Backup device is a Firewire Hard drive (Lacie 1Tb) running through the fw800 port.
Maser
I've had two crashes recently as well during backup server mode (under 10.3.9, but backing up some Tiger and Panther clients) -- turned out my hard disk was failing the SMART. Now, it *could* be that the backup server crashes injured my hard disks, but I couldn't prove that. Just something to check.
VictorLo
Yes, i did experience this also after update to 10.4.1..........it really mess up.....i'm going to revert back to 10.
RNHausler
I have experienced this same problem, and ONLY after updating to 10.4.1. Everything was working fine, made three complete backups with 10.4. Even after updating to 10.4.1 my "Normal" (incremental) backups seem to run okay; but I was trying to start a new backup set - it runs for several hours and then crashes. I also have never been in front of the machine whne this happens but it is during a backup operation (not idle). System specifics: PowerMac dual 1GHz G4 Quicksilver, 1.5 GB RAM, OS 10.4.1 HP DAT72x6 external Firewire devices LaCie 500GB HD and DVD-RW Retrospect Workgroup 6.0.212 (Tiger update) with 6.3.102 Driver update I have the crash report if that is of any use. Thanks.
cangel
Hi folks, I'm experiencing the same thing on 10.4.1. Retro 6.0.204 unexpected quits just at the end of my immediate backup. I'm backing up to an external firewire drive (La Cie). Has anyone been able to find a solution to this? I tried calling those guys. They're still keeping me on hold! It's been almost half an hour!!! Does this unexpected quit corrupt your backup if it crashes? Specs: Powermac 1.25 ghtz single processor G4 80 GB hard drive OS 10.4.
natew
cangel, Are you really running 6.0.204 or is that a typo? You need 6.0.212 to run Retrospect in Tiger. Thanks Nate
natew
Hi Can you give us some more details about the "crash"? What happens? Thanks nate
RNHausler
Hi Nate, I am traveling today so I can't provide the exact language, but I will do my best.... In my case, I initaite an immediate backup with a new storage set or a media recycle. The total backup represents about 50 GB of data; a successful backup takes about 7 hours. Somewhere along the way (4 hours +), Retrospect terminates; I don't remember the exact message that is on the screen when I check on it, but it is the one that reads something like "The application Retrospect has unexpectedly terminated...do you want to send a report to Apple?...." I have clicked yes, and copied the report that is generated into a word doc so I have this, but not with me at this point. If helpful, I can post it or mail it Wednesday night. As to the state of the Mac afterward, everything else appears OK. Other apps launch and run fine; I can re-launch Retrospect and re-try. I have tried to re-initiate backups at this point with and without a restart; results are the same. The Restropect log only indicates that the backup had begun, and that file copying had commenced (again, I am sorry I do not recall the exact language), and the next entry is the (re)launch of Retrospect. Thanks, TK
CallMeDave
I don't see anyone in this thread specify that they are excluding the Spotlight files that Dantz has identified as contributing to crashes in OS X 10.4/Retrospect 6.0.212 If you _are_ properly excluding these files and still seeing the application crash, that would be important information to provide. Dave
RNHausler
I have not been excluding the spotlight files. I will try this when I get back to my system. However, all of the info around the spotlight errors that I have read about indicates that this may be the cause of assert errors - I did not see anything about the application completely crashing. Granted, I have not read every post - but it does not sound like the problem I am having. Also, I was having no crash problems with 10.4 - my problems began after installing 10.4.1 . As I said, I will try this with spotlight files excluded this Friday, and see if it makes any difference. TK
CallMeDave
Mac OS X logs crashes automatically to /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ where you should find a Retrospect crash log. What do you see there? Dave
RNHausler
Dave, Don't know how much of the log report is relevant; here is the first part. Let me know if I should post more. I have also just initiated a backup with Spotlight files excluded; will report on the outcome tomorrow. priller
Retro 6.0.212 is crashing once or twice a day on my 10.4.1 box. Recent upgrade from 10.3.9, where it was working fine. denke
Do you mean by making the new Selector described here? http://kb.dantz.com/display/2n/searchDirect/?searchString=Spotlight&searchType=allwords&searchby=keywords&r=8.692569E-02 Once I do that, how do I also exclude cache files? tho3hite
I have also experienced a crash now three times using Retrospect under Tiger. Here are the details: COMPUTER: Powerbook G4 15" 1.5Ghz/2Gb/80Gb OS: 10.4.1 OTHER: 5 external firewire drives (WiebeTech) daisy chained to the FW800 port. One of these drives is partitioned into three 65Gb partitions. SOFTWARE: Retrospect 6.0.212 Driver 6.3.102 BACKUP MEDIA: Multiple Firewire HD connected through a hub to the FW400 port CRASH CIRCUMSTANCES: I started a backup of my boot volume and 6 external volumes. The application crased unattended while backing up the last volume ( a partition). I ran the backup of all 6 volumes again and had the same result, crashed while unattended. I checked the Operations Log and saw that all volumes appeared to have backed up with no signigicant errors except the last volume. I tried a backup of the last volume only and that ended in a crash while unattended. Finally I tried a backup of the last volume and watched the process; the crash occured at the point where the progress indicator changed from "Closing" to "Updating Catalog". I am selecting "All Files" and using options Verification on and Don't backup FileVault sparseimages. I read the thread about changing the selectors but the dowload specifies that it is only for users of a specific Maxtor drive; I am not using that drive so I still haven't installed it. The crash report is very long I will include it at the bottom of this post. CallMeDave
Quote: I read the thread about changing the selectors but the dowload specifies that it is only for users of a specific Maxtor drive Then you did not read it carefully. Dantz has an agreement with Maxtor to provide a version of Retrospect that has fewer features then the version you can buy directly. Since excluding Spotlight files may be a necessary way to work with Tiger, Dantz wrote a quick little installer to provide a version of a configuration file that excludes those files. If you have a commercial version of Retrospect, you can (and should) construct a selector to exclude the Spotlight files. http://kb.dantz.com/article.asp?article=7976&p=2 >The crash report is very long I will include it at the bottom of this post Please don't... There's mostly no useful information in these crash logs, due to the fact tht the program as commercially available does not contain any debugging code to isolate where in the program the problem is occuring. If you _did_ have a version of the program with the code in place, only the first couple of lines of the first thread would be helpful; after that it's all Mac OS stuff and not Retrospect related. These reports of Retrospect crashing with a bad address error are different then the reports of the Assertion error. They may be caused by the same sort of changes in Tiger, or they may be something entirely different. Dantz is going to have to figure this one out from within a debugger environment though, so isolating exactly _how_ to get this crash would be the most helpful thing users in the field could do. tho3hite
Dear Dave; >>Please don't... OK, I agree that was a bit over the top. I just wanted to avoid the "my program crashes all the time; please tell me why?" 1-line post syndrome. I read CAREFULLY the link you provided; BTW this is different than what I was reading before. I created a selector for all files except those inclosed in a folder named, ".Spotlight-V100". I reran my backup of the troubled volume and it completed with no problems. It seems Retrospect is crashing at the moment that it finishes updating the catlog and starts trying to compare the backup to the original file. Thanks for the pointer to the right help topic. TOTALLY OFF TOPIC: I have used Retrospect for several years now and have never used the selectors for anything. I have always thought that some files were pointless to be backing up but I was never confident about what to exclude so I always choose "All files". It would be nice to find a reference to how to use the program (which I depend on so much). All the manuals are written in a similar way. If you read the section about selectors it says something like, "selectors select which files are included/excluded from your backup". You never see something like this: If you are using a Mac OS X machine you can safely exclude the following file types from a complete backup...... For example I have always wondered how to exclude Retrospect Data files witout using the Retrospect files selector which seems to exclude everything, including catalog files. RNHausler
Finally got back to this problem - tried "Safe Boot" mode as suggested somewhere on this forum. Instead of Retrospect crashing, I got the following error: Trouble in Retrospect Internal consistency check failed: assertion check at elem.c-816 This was with Spotlight files excluded. dhwagner
Thomas wrote: Quote: For example I have always wondered how to exclude Retrospect Data files witout using the Retrospect files selector which seems to exclude everything, including catalog files. In my opinion, it makes sense to exclude all Retrospect files, and the catalog files in particular, because in the event that a volume is lost, you need the catalog file in order to restore the backup. In other words, if the only backup for the catalog file for"Backup Set A" is in "Backup Set A" itself, then if the catalog file is lost or damaged, the first thing you need to do is rebuild the catalog from Backup Set A, which may take a long time. In addition, catalog files get rather large and are modified every time you backup to that Backup Set. So, my solution is to exclude all Retrospect files from normal backups, and to backup Retrospect files separately onto a DVD-R. I also copy the catalog files onto a network server which is backed up by our system admin. If the catalog file is lost or damaged, it is relatively easy to rebuild the catalog for a single DVD-R. It's even easier to copy it back from the network server. That being said, I agree with you that more specific advice on use of selectors with MacOS X would be very much appreciated. David H. It should also be noted that even if the catalog backup is less then current, it can still be used as a starting point for a rebuild. Retrospect will only need to rebuild whatever catalog data that's newer then the backed up catalog version, which can save _tons_ of time in a disaster. lstone19
I've been having my only similar problems but maybe there's light starting to show. Retrospect server is still running Panther so still running .204. A few weeks ago, I upgraded my "test" system (my old G4 tower) with no notable problems. Updated the Retrospect client, ran the appropriate backup script and all was well. Over this past weekend, I upgraded my iBook. Updated the Retrospect client of course. Started a backup and came back to find the "unexpectedly terminated" dialog. Backup set file size (backing up to a file on the server) was appropriate to having finished the backup part of the run but nothing noted in the Retrospect log about having finished. Crash log had the same Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001) Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) Rebooted, tried again, same thing. Taking the advice of this thread, I tried adding the Spotlight exclusion selector. Boom! Now I have the tree-c.3444 assertion check. Removed the selector and still the same assertion check. Always about the same spot just shy of 500 MB backed up. Now I was wondering, could I still backup the G4 tower OK (it had had the latest Security Update added since the last full backup although a good incremental had been done). Yep, still OK. Back to the iBook. I started selecting only a portion to backup. Excluded everything between .Spotlight-V100 and Library and it backed up fine. Selected only folder between .Spotlight-V100 and Library and got the same assertion check. The name displayed when the assertion check (xR.html) is buried deep in the Mail.app package (there are several xR.html files since it's a language specific file). No time to do more testing until this evening. I'll try just backing up Mail.app and see what happens. More to come later.
