RetroMae
Hi, We have a new Windows 2012 R2 server with a Dell RD1000 drive that came with Retrospect 8.1. Client wants to do a 3 month rotation (she needs to keep the last 3 full monthly backups in reserve) and likes swapping cartridges daily. She also wants to alternate storing a Full weekly backup off-site. I have tried wrapping my head around all the different backup strategies and schedules, but am having a difficult time coming up with a solid plan. Can someone give me strategy to accomplish this? Thanks.
Daniels
When using tapes I had a four week rotation: Week 1 in drive; Week 2 on site; Week 3 and 4 off site; Full/Recycle backup for each week on Friday, Incremental backups during the week, and switch tapes on Monday. In your case it would be a similar setup also including four monthly tapes that would rotate in the same fashion.
RetroMae
When you say "week 1 in drive", do you mean you kept the same tape in the drive all week? I was thinking more along the lines of changing the cartridge every day.
Daniels
Since week 1's tapes got used multiple times during the week it was easier to leave them in the library than change them daily. If you are going to change tapes daily then you could use the same sequence with individual daily tapes for each day in each week.
