In 4 or 5 years or whatever time period, chances are you won't be able to find an optical drive that can read those disks....

In general optical support is really being phased out of Retrospect. The only supported drives are at http://www.retrospect.com/devices

For quite some time that page has contained the row:

Product name      -- Manufacturers -- Interfaces -- Media Types -- Mac

Panasonic SW-5582 -- Panasonic     -- ATAPI      -- Blu-ray     -- In Process

I'd love to know a little more about "In process"

Archival, I want something that will last years, won't get damaged if lightning strikes, and isn't directly subject to mechanical failure.

Then I suggest using tapes.

As a second choice, hard drives or SSD drives. Disconnected, of course. :)
