SkyDrive/OneDrive backup problems

Recommended Posts

I've just upgraded from 8.5 to 9, and find three issues still outstanding when used on a UEFI Windows 8.1 laptop.

- the first is the known 'Writer' issue. I hope with all the payment into upgrades we are going to get the fix on this for free, when it is supposed to come out (from what have heard) in the September timeframe.

- the second issue, which preceding 8.5 also had, is that files that SkyDrive knows about but which are not present on the machine get a lengthy error which I interpret to mean...that they are not present on the machine (missing inode).

- the third issue I just notice on pasting the log below. Right at the beginning there is a fairly unclear VSS issue. I hope this does not mean that backup of Open Files failed.

Please advice clearly what is going on here, which I may hope is actually just part of the Writer failure.

Then:

A log for all of these is below. I've held off reporting the SkyDrive issue, wanting to think how you might best handle it. I notice that it doesnt report as an extra error in the count on 'the Activity Monitor page of Retrospect 9. I suspect you should be able to save a useful reference so that the missing cloud files would recover to the same kind of visible status they have on the Windows 8 filesystem, and if so, you should do that.

It seems this would be cleaner, and more in the Retrospect dependability spectrum, to save and recover so. If you really can't, then it seems you shoudl just silently skip a non-present file from a cloud service, so as not to raise alarms.

Open season on any other cloud systems such as iCloud or Dropbox, where I haven't yet seen any errors (but may not have files that are in the cloud but are not on the machine).

Can we expect actually that you will properly handle backup and recovery of non-present file indicators? Would that be in the timeframe of the UEFI-Writer fix?

Thanks for your work, and here's that log for any uses. It's from an incremental Normal backup, on a machine that actually has about ten times as much storage on this filesystem.

Regards,

Clive

I am having precisely the same problem. And one of the reasons I paid a very high price for the 8.5-9.0 upgrade is that FINALLY there would be an attempt to clear up errors and insure that this program is as reliable as it should be. I won't be recommending it to anyone until it is.

In this case I would be more inclined to blame Microsoft for coming up with the Smart Files 'feature' and breaking something that had work fine until Windows 8.1. With Windows 8.1 OneDrive is now only usable if you log-on with a Microsoft account. If you log-on with a local account OneDrive is unusable. At least in previous versions of Windows there was the standalone desktop application but this won't install on Windows 8.1. The only option local account users have at present with Windows 8.1 is to use a third party application such as syncDriver.

I used to use OneDrive on my laptop until Windows 8.1 when I changed to Dropbox because I can't use a Microsoft account. (I still have a Windows 7 desktop that uses OneDrive to access the files I still have stored there.)

I tried V9 but didn't buy the upgrade because these errors still happen. Backups of a client laptop consistently fail because of the OneDrive/Skydrive errors. I was really hoping these would be fixed, as it stands I can't reliably backup the laptop which renders Retrospect fairly useless! I am going to try running a backup with a Selector that will exclude folders and subfolders with the names "OneDrive" or "SkyDrive" in them. Here a snip of the error log:

Created a Selector option to exclude "SkyDrive" and "OneDrive" folders, but it appears Retrospect is still trying to back them up.

Your backup failed because of the error "Trouble reading files, error -519 ( network communication failed)". There are also errors for Recycle Bin files which excluding OneDrive would have no effect on.

This is on a wired connection. I get the same error using WiFi or wired connections. At one point I thought I had fixed the problem when I noted that the VolumeShadowCopy included Skydrive folders that didn't exist any longer. I deleted all of the Skydrive/Onedrive folders on the laptop and let Windows recreate them. I got at least one successful backup after that, then the problems started again. I get similar errors on my host computer, but not as many, and the backup doesn't fail. I also have a NAS that gets backed up on the LAN it never fails either. I am convinced the problem lies within Retrospect. Currently I can't get reliable backups of the laptop.

The other puzzling bit, is that when I made a Selector to exclude the OneDrive folders, Retrospect still posts errors that mention the OneDrive folders. I think I will try clearing all of the contents from OneDrive and see if that has an effect.

I am becoming very frustrated with Retrospect. I tried V9 and got the same errors. I have been a Retrospect customer since V4 and generally my network backups worked fine until Windows 8 was released. I am not sure exactly when the error 519 started showing up, but I expected it to get fixed with Retrospect 9. Currently I have no plan to upgrade at this time and may consider moving to another product after testing it. Acronis True Image comes to mind.

Ok... After disabling OneDrive using the Group Manager the VSS and Map errors are gone. Unfortunately, the backup still failed so I have more work to do. To disable the OneDrive I used "Option 2" from this article: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/29426-onedrive-integration-windows-8-1-enable-disable.html

Here is the error that Retrospect reported:

I have tried using the WiFi and wired network connections, as well as different ports on my router and network switch, and I still get the -519 error. It would be nice if more information or trouble shooting resources were available for this. Hopefully Retrospect and Microsoft will get OneDrive to co-exist peacefully. Actually, if Retrospect could just ignore OneDrive I would be happy.

As this is a laptop what are the power management settings? Try disabling all power saving features when on AC power and see if this makes any difference. It could something as simple as power management kicking in because there has been no user (mouse, keyboard) activity.

Also check that the network drivers on both the backup server and client are at the current version. Can the backup server communicate with other clients without issue? I have had problems in the past with buggy NIC drivers that have caused Retrospect (and other applications that are making intensive of the network) to have problems communicating. (I have found the drivers available from the NIC manufacturer's website to be more reliable than those provided through Microsoft.)

Don't worry too much about these parts of the event log entry — event log entries from other applications also contain this because they are not interacting with Windows event logging in the 'approved' manner.

Thanks for the reply... Yes I checked my power settings. The laptop is set up not to go to sleep, I also changed the HD from sleeping after 999 minutes (16 hours) to never. The latest change I made was to change the NIC Jumbo Packet setting to 9014 on the host PC and laptop. When I did that the backup completed successfully. However, it may have been that after 6 attempts I finally whittled the file queue down to something small enough to be completed. I will update my post if it keeps working in the future.

I have checked to see if there is a newer driver for the laptop's NIC. Unfortunately, it is an older machine (HP 9000dv) with an Intel NIC that is no longer supported by Intel.
