"Normal" Backup Specifics

Recommended Posts

I've found conflicting information regarding the way Retrospect performs "Normal" backups. In different articles I've seen this type of backup called synthetic full, incremental, incrementalPLUS, and differential.

After sorting through all the information, my best guess is that it performs a full backup at first, and from then on performs a "special" type of incremental. That is, it not only adds new files, but it also adds a new version of modified files (allowing one to restore different versions of the file if needed).

Can someone please confirm if this is correct and, if not, explain the specifics of how it works?

Thanks! :)
