Change label on a tape that belongs to a media set

Is it possible? I had to add a free tape, and now for organizational purposes i want to change the label...

That depends on what you mean by "label".

The label with the bar code on? Yes, that's possible, at least on The Windows version.

The name of the tape? No, that isn't possible (without erasing the contents).

No I don't want to change the contents... I just want to change the label (we use bar code and proprietary codes for organizational purposes). So, if I change the label it will be reconigzed by the media set?

In the Windows version, just replace the bar code label. Insert the tape into the drive and "scan" the tape. Then Retrospect will know.

I assume the same goes for the Mac version.

The best way to change the label is to first manually erase the tape and then add the tape to the media set you want it in. This will guarantee that the media set knows about the tape.

But in that way, i have to mark as lost this one, right?

If you just change the barcode label then the name of the tape will not change so Retrospect should detect the barcode change and update the media set members accordingly. I personally have never had this been successful. If Retrospect asks for old barcode you can point it to the new barcode and it should work.

If you replace the barcode on a tape that belongs to an existing backup set, you are going to confuse Retrospect.

 

1) Erase the tape

2) Change the bar code

3) Erase the tape again or add it to a media set.
