E-mail notification on assert

I would say "no". An assert is a very low-level type of error. This mean the normal error has already failed and this is the last resort. Sending an email is (in this context) a very "high level" task. The program (Retrospect) is probably not even able to get the email address off the preferences file, let alone open a new network connection to the mail server.
