Retrospect Small Business Server Premium Grooming Misery

Nice trick to get rid of issues: start a new Forum without porting the old messages.

 

Groom still fails (7.7.562) the same way as before (see thread "Grooming misery" 'forum.dantz.com' 'Server, SBS and Multi Server' started on 1 November 2010)

 

Grooming misery

 

For some years now Grooming "Disk Backup Sets" starts damaging the Backup Set.

 

First a new "Disk Backup Set" is created (on a newly formatted, NTFS (NOT compressed) hard disk). After the Backup Set reaches its limit, errors start to appear.

These range from ".. you must recreate the Backup Set's Catalog" to Assert errors.

Sometimes a "Catalog repair" solves the issue.

I followed the advice in "Grooming Tips and Troubleshooting (9629)"

(1) >30Gb on C: (system)

(2) Catalog files are stored on separate disk (D: Not disks containing .rdb files)

(3) C: (system) and D: (Catalog files) are continually defragmented.

(4) once a week.

(5) 3, 4 or "Defined Policy"

(7) Done often

(8) 32 Gb RAM

(9) 10% of disk-space for disks containing .rdb files, C and D more than 50% free space

(10,11) all disks are in server

I follow kbArticle # 9629 to the letter:

 

 

(1) C drivehas 50% free space (>100Gb)

 

(2) Catalogfiles are stored on D, also > 50% free space (100Gb)

 

 

Catalog file size: after Recycle 180 Mb, after severalBackups <500 Mb

From Roxio support:

 

Grooming is a destructive process. Grooming every twoweeks would be considered too often and can potentially cause missing files,corruption, and further problems with the program when attempting to continueusing the backup set.

 

From kb

 

4) Don't groom too often. Grooming will automaticallyremove data when the destination disk fills up. If you want to make sure thedisk never fills, create a grooming script (Automate>Manage Scripts>New)to run once a week. Grooming every day is typically not needed.

 

It says 'once a week'.

 

 

And, I do have a disk based backup set, that wasn'tgroomed at all.

 

The grooming started, automatically, when the backup setreached its limits.

 

 

There is definitely something wrong with the Groomingprocess.

I have experienced a similar issue and behavior. My primary config difference is I have a LUN mounted as an NTFS mounted folder underneath the root. Grooming incorrectly detects the free space of the mounted sub-volume but rather the root volume.

 

I 2nd the suggestion to revisit the logic in the Grooming process~

There is a fix to some grooming issues in Retrospect for Windows V8.0. From the release notes located here:

"2413: Fixed a bug that caused repeat occurrences of Grooming error -2241 even after catalog rebuilds"

 

I groom my disk backup sets once a week and run into grooming issues every other month or so. I end up recycling the disk backup set and then do a Transfer Backup Set from my most recent tape backup set to the newly recycled disk backup set. It's a pain to do but I'm not ready to move to V8 yet.

Does version 8 resolve this?

 

No. although, I haven't tried transferring my backup sets (created in 7.7) to a new one yet... using existing backups sets which have these errors still plays up under RS8 :(

Am I glad, I didn't pay the extortionate amount of money for this bug fix!

Again, they should FIX bugs and don't let user who bought version 7.7, pay!

The one good thing worth upgrading for is the Instant Scan feature.

In case of Instant Scan, these errors are due to temporary files that existed during scan but no longer during backup. Tech Support can provide a pre-release that avoids such errors, as well as fixing certain grooming related assertion failures.

Hi David;

 

My logs were from our CVS server, which is backed up at 8pm via a script and no developers are making changes to the file structure.

 

Some of these errors include the follow - certainly not temporary files, but may have potentially been changed during the working day.
