nigelw
Good afternoon, I am about to configure a new server with Retrospect 7.5 to backup a few Windows servers, including Exchange 2003. D2D2T configuration - HP server, 1Tb disk and Ultrium 2 448 tape drive. I was thinking of just using 'Proactive' backup for all the servers, but I suspect that the disks will quickly run out of space doing the Exchange backups. Is there a recommended configuration for Exchange setups? Thanks, Nigel
nekr0phage
Hi Nigel, The only thing I can really recommend would be to back up the Exchange server container as well as the mailboxes, this way you can perform a full restore of the server as well as restore individual boxes or messages. nigelw
Thanks, I'll make sure I select both 'volumes'. Is Proactive still the recommended method to backup, or would a normal scheduled backup be best? Does this also notify Exchange to remove the temporary log files it creates? nekr0phage
Nigel, Proactive is typically recommended for sources that are not going to be reliably available, such as user laptops that will be on the network at irregular times. With an Exchange backup, a normal script should suffice. Full backup clears the log, differential does not, log/incremental will truncate.
nigelw
OK, so I've created 2 'Normal' scheduled scripts (not Proactive) 1. Full Backup - Friday evening, every 1 week 2. Differential Backup - Every other evening, every 1 week This should clear the logs weekly? I suspect this is going to get quite large, very quickly? It will be going straight to disk and then a Snapshot Transfer to Tape once per week. Thanks, Nigel
Mayoff
Don't forget to do mailbox level backups. Doing a restore of an exchange server isn't easy (thank you MS) but restoring mailbox data is super easy.
