jbobdobbs
Our new library (Sony LIB-162 / AIT-3) shipped with Bar Code detection turned on. I found this out after experiencing very long delays as the library initialised tapes, and also when Retrospect 6.0 (Mac OS X 10.3.4 on a dual G4 847 with 1.25Gb RAM, ATTO UL3S SCSI card). Turned bar codes off on the library and the scan time dropped from about ten minutes to about two minutes. I'm looking for some advice on whether to use Bar Codes and / or R-MIC (some sort of Sony proprietary radio-based identification for each tape cartridge) with Retrospect. 1. Will it speed tape access to use bar codes? 2. Even if it doesn't, is it a good idea to use them anyway? 3. Is R-MIC a substitute for bar codes, or is that something local to the tape library? Or perhaps it requires support in Retrospect (and it's not supported yet)? Any and all pearls of wisdom are welcome.
natew
Hi Retrospect does not take advantage of the MIC. I talked to a rep from Sony about this a couple of years ago - at that point no software makers supported it. Barcodes are your best bet. jbobdobbs
So using bar codes on the tapes will significantly speed up tape access? R-MIC's shut off now. Thanks for the confirmation.
natew
Hi It will speed up media scans over time and will help Retrospect locate media. You will still have to do a standard media scan with new tapes. Thanks Nate
jbobdobbs
Why "over time"? Shouldn't it speed things after the first media scan where it associates bar codes with tape titles? Once that table is created, why would subsequent passes be faster?
