BitPusher
After finally coming to the realization that I was never going to get a reply to my -1020 error at tape change on V6.5, last Friday I took a chance and purchased V7.0 from EMC/Dantz thinking that maybe the problem was fixed in the new version. After all - how bad could it be? Well I found out. Compared to V6.5, V7.0 with update V7.0.5.102 is not usable by me for the following 2 reasons, NONE of which occurred with V6.5: 1. V7.0 is unable to either successfully verify, back up (copy), or both all but the smallest EFS encrypted .ZIP files although it can successfully back up/verify non-ZIP EFS files and large (over 1.7 GB) non-EFS ZIP files. 2. Getting -1020 (Sharing Violation) errors and some errors I've never even seen before during the verify of some files on a quiesced system. In case you think there is a problem with the drive, partition L which was successfully backed up is on the same physical drive as is partition F and I also ran a PKZIPC -test operation on 3 of the files that failed the Retrospect verify and PKZIP reported that the .ZIP file integrity was "OK". I also ordered the physical CD and printed manual for V7 that should arrive later this week. However, I'm not going to even open the package because unless there is a solution to these problems SOON I'm going to uninstall V7.0, reinstall V6.5, and then ship the package back to EMC/Dantz for a refund. By the way, I still get the -1020 error at tape change during the copy portion of the backup with V7.0. Because this backup set is obviously trash, I cancelled the backup after getting the -1020 error at tape change. No sense wasting any more time or wear and tear on the equipment. Below I enclosed the Operations Log and you can judge for yourself if it looks like the log of a thoroughly tested product. Carl E. BitPusher
Just some more information I happened to think of. Although it didn't affect Retrospect V6.5, because the F partition consists mostly of large files I had formatted it with an allocation unit size of 16384 instead of the default of 4096. Carl E. Mayoff
Sharing Violation errors are coming directly from the operating system. It is the Windows operating system that is reporting to Retrospect that these files are in use and can not be copied. The data offset error is an indication that the file on the backup is not 100% identical to the original file (because it appears to be changing). If you go to Windows Explorer, are you able to make a copy of this file: File "F:\TOREORG\IMSPLIP0.ZIP" or File "F:\TOREORG\CDRPA3CMP2-0002.ZIP If you can successfully Copy and Paste this file with Windows explorer, what happens if you attempt to backup the copy? See if you can copy the folder F:\TOREORG to another disk, what happens?
BitPusher
Mayoff, Just to make a quick reply before I run some of the tests you requested. In the second sentence of the first paragraph of your reply, you indicate "...these files are in use and can not be copied." If you carefully look at the Operations Log I supplied, you will see that ALL of these errors occurred during the Retrospect V7 Verify operation. Also, the backup was being executed on a quiesced system. The ONLY other application running was the Windows XP Performance Monitor and its Perf*dat files are on partition D which had already been successfully copied/verified. Carl E. BitPusher
Mayoff, I ran the first test you requested, but there is too much data in F:\TOREORG\ to copy the entire directory in a reasonable ammount of time. I prepared the data for the test as follows: 1. Copied F:\TOREORG\CDRPA3CMP2-0002.ZIP to E:\RETV7_BUG_E\ - No Problems 2. From the copy on E:\RETV7_BUG_E\ I copied it to F:\RETV7_BUG_F\ - No problems 3. Again copied the copy on E:\RETV7_BUG_E\ to F:\RETV7_BUG_F_notEFS\ - No Problems 4. Since at this point all 3 copies were EFS encryped, I decrypted the copy in F:\RETV7_BUG_F_notEFS\ - No Problems 5. I ran it twice because it is a royal pain to have to deal with selectors when doing an ad hoc backup that spans multiple volumes. Would be much more user friendly if Retrospect would also offer an "Explorer like" interface as does the Windows XP backup program. In the following operations log, notice that each of the EFS encrypted .ZIP files failed during the VERIFY operation. These 2 runs were made on a quiesced system except for the Windows XP Performance Monitor. Note that the decrypted .ZIP file worked just fine. This confirms the erroneous operation of V7 as I reported in #1 of my original post. Also, the Allocation Unit Size has nothing to do with the problem because drive E has the default Allocation Unit Size of 4096. Carl E. BitPusher
Mayoff, After running the test you requested, I ran my own test that confirms (at least to me) that there is nothing the matter with the files being backed up. Enclosed is the log of a run of the Windows XP Professional backup program of those same 3 files plus the original file, F:\TOREORG\CDRPA3CMP2-0002.ZIP. As you can see, there were no problems. Like the test I ran for you this was run on a quiesced system with only the Windows XP Prformance Monitor running. Carl E. michaeln
Hi, Would you mind elaborating on the encryption process of these .zip files? I have zip files created with WinZip and I did the following: 1. Right clicked zip file > Properties 2. Under General tab > Advanced Attributes button 3. Check the box for "Encrypt Contents to secure data" I encrypted them and then backed them up but received no errors. So, a couple questions: 1. How are you encrypting these files? 2. What happens if you encrypt non-zip files and try to back them up?
BitPusher
Hello, The answers to your questions: 1. I EFS encrypted most of these files about one and a half years ago but I did it by selecting the directory name and not individual file names. That way any new files copied/moved into those directories will automatically be EFS encrypted. The files were originally ZIPed using PKWARE's command line PKZIPC utility. 2. All non-ZIP EFS files present NO problems as I stated in #1 of my original post. An example of this would be my Quicken data files. What is interesting is that some very small EFS .ZIP files seem to work ok. In any event, none of these EFS .ZIP file problems occurred with Retrospect V6.5. The only problem I had in V6.5 was that these ZIP files were unable to span tape media. I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I got a bad V7 download file or if something didn't work right during the Retrospect upgrade from V6.5 to V7.0. All files in the Retrospect main install directory are dated 2005 except for: 11/13/2004 ask.exe 11/22/2002 aspichk.exe 11/22/2002 aspiinst.exe 11/14/2004 mailsndr.exe Carl E. BitPusher
This is an update on the test/experiment I am running. I completely uninstalled (remove) Retrospect V7.0 and made sure the install directory was empty. Then I installed, from scratch, Retrospect V6.5.350 and Driver Update V5.4.110. I ran a test backup of 15 of the problem files (2.9 G) with Retrospect V6.5 and NO errors were reported. Now I am going to uninstall (remove) Retrospect V6.5 and then reinstall V7.0 from scratch instead of upgrading from V6.5. Then I'll run a test backup with V7.0 of those same files and see what happens. I will report back on the results. Carl E. Johnson
BitPusher
I completed my test/experiment and Retrospect V7.0 is still NOT usable. One large .ZIP file that failed before worked ok this time. Out of 15 files, only 2 were successful - Not very impressive. Version 6.5 gets an A+ since it was totally successful. Obviously something has been "broken" in V7.0. The same 15 files were used for both of these tests, and I ran both of them on a quiesced system with only the Windows XP Performance Monitor running. Various information follows my name. Carl E. michaeln
Hi Carl I believe I have been able to reproduce the issue. It looks like it only happens with encrypted large zip files as you have suggested (I have only tested zip files so far and not large files in general). We will be looking into this. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
cajun100
As a pretty happy small office user about to make the 6.5 to 7.0 version changeup, I have read this thread with much interest. What I am REALLY impressed with, however, is the cool professional give-and-take that occurred in these exchanges. So much above some of the horrible complaining and whining that takes place on so many product support tech forums. Real information and a real scrutiny by tech support -- how unusual. Well done, "bitpusher" and Retrospect tech staff!
BitPusher
Thanks for the update Michael. Because my system was in limbo because of no backup program, I've (hopefully temporarily) reverted back to my registered copy of V6.5. I hope some kind of solution can be found by August 8, 2005 because that is when I will have to break the CD, tear up the V7 printed manual, delete the V7.0 files, and mail the "LETTER OF SOFTWARE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY NO-USE" by certified mail back to EMC/Dantz to ensure it is received before the 30-day refund period expires. I would much rather have a working copy of V7 than the refund. Hopefully a solution will be found. Thanks again, Carl E. Johnson
BitPusher
Since this problem was reproducible (inability of V7.0 to backup and/or verify large EFS encrypted .zip files), I'm wondering if a solution will be made available in an update to V7.0 or will this not be corrected until a future major Retrospect Professional release (the $$$ kind)? My 30-day refund period is rapidly coming to an end and I have to decide by early next week what I am going to do. If a fix is forthcoming for V7.0, I will probably wait for it and save myself and EMC/Dantz the hassle of dealing with a refund. Any guidance for this matter would be appreciated. Carl E. BitPusher
Hi Mayoff, First, let me say that I never thought EMC/Dantz was trying to cheat me in any way. EMC/Dantz Customer Service has a seemingly rigid but well defined refund policy which I am willing to abide by, so early this morning before receiving your reply, I executed the conditions of the "LETTER OF SOFTWARE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY NON-USE" and then mailed it at the post office on my way out this morning to insure that it gets to California by Friday, because my 30-day trial period expires this weekend. Once I get my refund we will be "even-steven". I have been mostly satisfied with Retrospect V6.0 and V6.5 and on more than one occasion it allowed me to recover from various types of "system disasters", and I will continue to use V6.5.350 until the next major release when I hope this problem will be fixed. However, I think I've learned to "trial" a new version before buying to make sure there are no "show stopper" issues. Carl E. Johnson
