I did have to boot from the old drive (now in the Firewire enclosure) in order to be able to select the new boot volume as my startup disk. Presumably I could have used a MacOS 9.1 CD for this purpose, just as well. A number of relatively minor date/time errors occurred in the duplicate process, as I have reported in a separate post.
