Server idle but backup incomplete

Recommended Posts

I have my old 8500/G3, running Mac OS 9.1, set up as a Retrospect Backup Server, scheduled to run nightly to back up a B&W G3 and an iMac G5, both running Panther. There have been a series of failures for one reason or another. The last few nights, the problem has to do with the server remaining in "idle/loading/preparing" instead of actually performing the scheduled backup. For example, last night the server ran only 9 seconds but then was idle for almost 12 hours, while 229 files were still waiting to be backed up. The result was that the iMac got a report that the backup was incomplete. Here's the log for that part of the action.

Remaining: 226 files, 2912 KB

Completed: 0 files, zero KB

Performance: 0.0 MB/minute

Duration: 11:59:04 (11:58:55 idle/loading/preparing)

By changing the custom schedule, I have been able to get the backup going manually, but the scheduled backup session, fails again the next night.

Can anyone tell me where I should be looking to fix this problem?
