Concerns regarding update to Retrospect 12
J4RF posted a topic in Retrospect 9 or higher for Macintosh
Hi all, In my workplace, we're currently using Retrospect 11.5.3 to backup all of our systems. We're considering making the jump to RS 12, but I'm concerned by some of the weird quirks I've encountered in 11.5.3 (such as: scheduled backups not running - engine needs a reset, backup clients not found - sources need to be relocated, reserved backup clients - client system needs a reboot, among some others....) and would like to get an idea of whether I should expect things to be better or worse in version 12. So before we go any further in consideration, I'd like to ask forum users about their experience with Retrospect 12. Any input as to what issues I might expect, or expect to be resolved, what works, what doesn't, and anything relating to 11 vs. 12 overall would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jeff- 1 reply

RetroEngine 11: Crash/Hang due to Out of Memory Issue
geryoei posted a topic in Retrospect bug reports
An old issue has been "revived": - During a cleanup task the engine does not free its private memory running into a out of application memory issue Initial setup (already set at version 10 and run at least for 60 times successfully before upgrading to 11.0.0-194): - weekly scheduled cleanup of all mediasets - mediaset settings vary from "retrospect policy" to "last 10 times" depending on the mediaset content and type The script runs each friday night at 8 pm for about 12 hours. This works fine until the upgrade to 11.0.0 The first friday after upgrading to 11.0.0 the task runs as well, but leaving my system unusable with a memory issue "out of application memory". Holding the engine and freeing 500 MB of memory by closing some open applications, shows, that the engine consumed 24 GB of private memory and additionally 23.9 GB of kernel memory. Stopping the engine by killing the process 'kill <process-id>' freed all memory instantaneously. While trying to reproduce the issue, I manually started a cleaning/grooming task: 1.) taking memory footprint of retroengine (0.034 GB physical private memory / 2.61 GB virtual memory) 2.) starting cleanup task 3.) waiting for 10th+ collection stage 4.) taking another memory footprint of retroengine (22.3 GB physical private memory) 5.) stopping the task using the retrospect console, leaves the engine with still allocated 22.3 GB private memory Please see enclosed screenshots for further information of steps 2 to 5. Possibly there are two issues with retroengine 11.0.0: a.) excessive memory usage whilst cleaning b.) not freeing memory between stages Unfortunately I cannot go back to version 10 as I already migrated my mediasets! Backing up OS X clients to Retrospect on a Windows server
FMNTech posted a topic in Server, SBS and Multi Server
I am trialing Retrospect 8.1 Server on a Win 2012 Server. I am trying to create selective backups of folders on a Mac client. Searches on the Retrospect site didn't provide any clues. Under 'Selecting' I tired using the pre-identified Mac OS (HFS/HFS+) Special Folders 'Desktop Folder" and 'Documents". When the backup finished, it contained the logged-in users 'Documents' and 'Downloads'. I then tried Including these folder names through the 'Universal' method selecting the Folder checkbox, entering the 'Desktop' and 'Documents', and I got pretty much all the folders in the user's directory. Finally, I tried excluding folder 'Downloads', 'Music', 'Movies', and 'Pictures' checking the Folder option and selecting 'match' in the pattern. This did not work either. How do I properly select a folder for inclusion or exclusion using Retrospect Server on Windows with a Mac OS X 10.8.3 or .4 client? Thanks
