    Source Volume

Hi Amy. Thank you for your quick response. It seems the only time my CD-RW drive shows as a Source option is when I have the backup CD installed in it. At that time, I do not have the option to right click and "forget." If there is no CD in the drive, then only my regular partitions (C and D) are shown as sources. I was wrong before when I said D is my CD-RW. That's actually F. I have Direct CD but don't use it to format my backup CDs. I will bear in mind what you said. I just never have had the option to "Forget" the CD-RW drive. No big deal I guess. I'll just ignore it when it appears. Thanks. Dave

    Source Volume

A weeks ago, my CD-RW writer (Drive D) started appearing as a Source Volume when I initiate a backup. Of course that would never be a source as it is what I use to write the backups. Can you tell me how to get rid of this? I am using Express 5.6.132. Thank you. Dave

    Reverting back to 5.6

Amy-Thank you for a response, but it would have been more useful had it been *helpful*. By rereading my original post you will see the subject was "reverting". Nothing about downgrading. I was hoping to avoid possible problems by referring to people who should know their product. As mentioned, I am concerned about the use of license codes. I have one for my original purchase (Express 5.5) and I have one for the free upgrade to 5.6. Is it best to start with 5.6 (which I want to end up with) and use that license code? What are the ramifications of prompts to register, which I already did long ago? Hopefully I can get some expert advice and soon. Thank you. Dave

    Reverting back to 5.6

Bump DANTZ (Or anybody) - I could sure use some help here. I believe my trial expires Oct. 19 and I don't want to be without the protection...although If something happens where I cannot bring up Windows (as it did recently), I don't know that Retrospect would be much help. At least it gives me very convenient incremental backups. A reply, please??? Thank you. Dave

    Reverting back to 5.6

I have a trial copy of Retrospect Professional 6 which will soon expire. At this time I see no advantage to that over my previous Express 5.6. I was interested in the assumed flexibility of the Selectors, but I find I cannot modify them suitably. My question is how do I go about reverting back to 5.6? In the interim, I had d'loaded a trial copy of Desktop but that did not install properly. Then came the Retro Pro. All these went into the same original Dantz folder (I was not given a choice either time). I started out by purchasing Express 5.5 and upgraded to 5.6. There is a Retrospect 6 in the MS Add/Remove section. In the event I do decide NOT to purchase version 6 at this time, should I completely remove all Dantz items? After that, would I proceed to install with my original 5.5 CD and then add the 5.6? Or would I begin with the version 5.6? Of course I am concerned here with the Product License Codes. I would appreciate your guidance on this. I hope it is not too confusing. Thank you. Dave

    Professional specifics?

Hello. I hope you will tell me a few things about Retrospect version 6 Professional which I have not been able to learn. Is that very similar to the Desktop 5.6 program in that one has the choice of different snapshots for restores and expanded Selectors over the Express version? I saw a price of $89.00 at Dantz's site as opposed to $149.00 I had seen earlier. I assume that is correct. Is the manual which is included with the packaged version a "real" manual as opposed to the very abbreviated hot sheet "manual" that came with the packaged version of Express? I would love to try Professional as that would answer most of my questions and doubts but I note Dantz says you should not download a trial copy if you are a registered user of another version and then refers to a different branch which only shows upgrades to 5.6. I apparently made a mistake when I bought Express as opposed to Desktop. I later learned on your forums of the added features. I have no need for network capabilities and was under the impression that was the main difference between Express and Desktop. I downloaded a trial copy of Desktop but after running the setup for that I see I still in effect have the Express version. What went wrong I have no idea. Now you have version 6 out and I am contemplating purchasing that. Thank you for your info. Dave

Thank you Melissa. Now that I have your attention (?), would you please refer to the thread "Uprgading Express to Desktop" so you can see a new question I submitted yesterday. At that time I erroneously replied to myself and I'm not sure you would see the message. It concerns another problem re the trial version of Desktop. Thank you. Dave

Hi Chuck. Thanks for your message. Well, I looked all over my Dantz folder (again) and the CD, but I cannot find anything about the icons in the preview pane. As I have stated, Melissa has explained the diamond icon in another thread. Can you tell me what the icon which looks like a pencil with a line through it represents? As far as the diamond icon, after looking through the preview pane, that doesn't make complete sense either. I could see some files with the diamond which I was sure had been backed up previously, but I also saw files which did not have the diamond yet I could think of no reason why they would have changed since the last backup. Yet "apparently" they were marked for backup. Maybe they would not have been backed up due to Dantz's so called "smart" incrementals. Your advice re the pencil (?) icon would be appreciated. Thank you. Dave

    Upgrading Express to Desktop

Hello Melissa. Here I am with another problem. I downloaded a trial copy of Retrospect Desktop and ran the installer, but I seem to still have only my purchased copy of Express. The "about" box from the main directory shows Retrospect Express version 5.6.132, which is exactly what I had before installing (??) the Desktop trial version. My Dantz folder does contain both the Retrospect and the Express PDF User Guides. I just opened the main window of the program today so I could look into the selectors info in more detail. The Retro users guide says I access this by clicking the "Special" tab in the main directory, but there is no such tab. Things look exactly as they did with my Express version. Incidentally, I was never asked to enter the Product License Code after I installed Desktop trial. You will recall I was not given a choice of program location when I installed the trial so everything is in one folder (Dantz). Now I don't know what I have (except a mess). Any suggestions? Thanks. Dave

    Upgrading Express to Desktop

Hi again Melissa. The thought just came to me. I doubt the "other copy of 5.6" you just installed was a trial version, as is mine. Perhaps that has some bearing on my not getting a choice of locations. Regards. Dave

Thanks Chuck. I will remember to keep an eye out for that during my next backup, as well as for the diamonds Melissa said indicates files which were already backed up and won't be repeated. I am not aware of any place we can go to see what all those little icons in the preview pane indicate. Is there somewhere we can learn that? Thanks. Dave

There MUST be an easier way... :(

Hi. Will assume you are correct. I will watch for this later as I continue my struggles. However, there definitely were cases where there were NEW files (version revisions, new installs, etc.) that did not get backed up. This would only happen when I was trying to exclude folders. Well, this has been a pain for several months. I will say a regular backup or incremental, usually, couldn't be simpler. Dave

Yes, Melissa, that is what I mean. I uncheck the block to the far left. Now, is there a trick to how you get out of the preview screen and back to the main backup screen? Generally when I go back it says zero files selected yet there are many selected in preview. Also, for an incremental Retrospect should pick up any newer files. I have found that although when it said zero selected, if I proceeded I would get a backup. Other times the log file would should 0 bytes and (1) snapshot. Well, I'll butt out of this thread now. Sorry I interrupted. Dave

Melissa, I hate to jump in on somebody else's thread. Why don't you explain How he deselects those folders? I wrote for help on this before but never rec'd a reply. I can uncheck a couple folders but then get those on the bu and don't get an otherwise complete bu. Dave

    Upgrading Express to Desktop

Yes, that is strange, but it is the way it happened for me. BTW, sure wish Dantz would keep its users more up to date. Version 6 id being sold elsewhere on the net. Cheers. Dave
