  1. Well, to conclude... I tried removing a variety of things from the /Library/Application Support/Retrospect in a variety of ways and nothing seemed to make a difference. I tried uninstalling and re-installing but that helped but only until I tried putting back my preferences and files. Then it went back to having the Console continually drop the connection to the Engine. I finally just removed everything and re-installed from scratch. I rebuild all my settings and am currently doing a backup. It seems to work fine but something got pretty well messed up.

    So, it appears that if you have this issue, the only way to solve is to do a full delete and re-install from scratch and rebuild your settings/scripts.


    As an aside... when I re-installed there is no longer an 'uninstall' script. Did I miss something? Where did the uninstall go?

    tickland... Thank you SO much for this... I could NOT figure out where the Engine (server) tools were other than via the Console (also a word I wasn't getting out).

    Alas, stopping the Engine, removing "Config80.bak" & " Config80.dat," and then restarting didn't change the issue. Console tries to connect, gets the Engine (server) for a second or two and then it drops.

    I'll give the uninstall/reinstall a try when I have a little more time.

    I DO have some scripts built. Is the Config80 the only files I need worry about to keep?



  3. Hey all. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts about this...

    Within the last month or so,  Retrospect (v12.5.0 (111)) on my iMac (OS 10.11.3) has suddenly stopped working. It's as if the server side just can't start up. I'll launch the application, I'll get a "Connecting," all the various things will populate in the interface, then wham, it's back to "Connecting" again. Even worse, when I went to write this I checked and now I can't connect at all to the server. To note: the server and the Desktop client tools are running on the same iMac.

    I've run the Retrospect Engine Installer.pkg but that hasn't seemed to help.

    Activity monitor says that the following are running...



      Retrospect Client


    Yet, I can't get the application to connect with the Server.

    I've added and removed the server within the application a couple of times. Sometimes as the local iMac's IP, sometime as the local loopback ( Still nada.


    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Erg. That's quite the job. Not really sure my two kids will leave me the time to do that. crazy.gif Ok, I'll see what I can figure out. Thanks much for the suggestion!

    What about the DiskWarrior log? What is DW doing when it fixes things?





    What I'm doing is fixing the directory structure. The last one I did the log didn't say much other than "4 files" fixed. Alas, I didn't save out the log as I was in a rush. Perhaps this weekend I'll run it again and be able to give you a more specific answer.

    Does anyone have any suggestions how to find a file on a Retrospect Client which keeps causing a "Scanning incomplete, error -43 (file/folder not found)" error?

    I usually can fix the error by running DiskWarrior with the PowerBook in FireWire target mode, but then, a few days, a week later it crops up again. I'm getting real tired of failed incremental backups so I'd like to figure out what file is doing this. However, the Retro log isn't very detailed on this...


    Is there any verbose logging or anything 'tricky' I can do with the catalogs to figure out what the file(s) may be?


    Tech Info:

    Retrospect for Mac (latest version) on dual G5 tower (latest Mac OS).

    Client is Mac G4 PB (latest Mac OS) with Retro Client (latest).

    Backup in incremental nightly with local tower, PB and one PC.


    Any idea would be greatly appreciated! Once I sort this I can get on to figuring out why the darned thing also gets stuck in a "Net Retry" with said same PB!! <g> crazy.gif

  7. Suggestions How to Build a Backup to Do This…


    * Mac OS 10.4.10, dual G5 w/ attached FW800 RAIDed drive.

    * Retrospect for Mac 6.1.126 w/ Driver update

    * Backing up local Mac, remote (WiFi) PowerBook and remote PC (Ethernet).


    I was wondering if anyone could suggest how to build the following…


    1.) Daily incremental backup of specific folders (home directories) on clients.

    2.) Once a month Recycle that backup and start fresh.


    Essentially I have this happening now, but the only way I could figure how to do it was to make my incremental daily backup not occur every Thursday so I could then make a recycle backup happen on a Thursday late in the month. I’d _like_ to have those empty Thursdays be incremental backups, but I can’t figure out how to do that without ‘stepping on’ my recycle backup.


    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
