  1. I was think about upgrading from 9.5 to 10, but took a look at the Retrospect forum first. Anyone having good/bad upgrade experiences? Tom
  2. I'm running Retrospect Multiserver 7.7.562 with the Value Pack on a fully patched Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit system. Upon reboot, Activity Monitor is active and backup scripts start running. When I try to start the Retrospect application, nothing happens. Retrospect.exe is running. I don't need Activity Monitor, so is it possible to remove it from the startup list? How can I get the main Retrospect application to appear? This wasn't a problem until recently. I've been using Retrospect since version 1.0 on a Mac Plus with a big stack of floppy disks. Glad to see that it's independent again. Tom
  3. Robin, Thanks for responding! So to get control of the Retrospect program, I should wait until running backups have completed, kill Retrospect.exe in Task Manager, then start Retrospect manually? I assume the way to stop this from happening is to check the box in Retrospect that disables scheduled backups before quitting the program. Is there any other way to avoid this problem? Tom
  4. I'm running Retrospect Multiserver 7.7.562 on a fully patched Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit system with 24GB RAM. The tape drive that's attached to the server is an HP StorageWorks Ultrium 920 LTO-3 with the latest HP driver and firmware. It's attached to an HP SCSI controller, and I'm using brand new HP LTO-3 tapes. HP's tape drive diagnostics show that the drive is functioning correctly in all respects. When running the script to transfer snapshots to tape, the transfer starts, transfers a few files at high speed, and after a few seconds, hangs. I've tried copying snapshots from a very small backup set with the same results. I have to kill the Retrospect.exe process and restart the server to get Retrospect running again, and am now having a problem getting past the Activity Monitor to the main Retrospect program that I described in a previous topic. For years, copying snapshots to this tape drive worked. It may have been the upgrade to 7.7 that broke the process. I've had this problem previously on a Windows Server 2003 R2, and thought that moving the tape drive to a new server would solve the problem, but it didn't. Any ideas on what the problem is? Tom
  5. I've used Dantz products since 1985, so I like the product a lot, but have always been concerned with the bugs. I'm running Retrospect 7.6.123 on a Windows 2003 Server. I'm rebuilding the backup to disk catalog file yet again after grooming failed, which will take a couple of days to process 6 TB of data. I have to do this 2-3 times a year, but I live with it. I have had instances where backup downtime due to rebuilds has caused some lost files to be unrecoverable because the computer that lost the file wasn't being backed up for several days. So all I want is for grooming as well as disaster recovery issues to be fixed once and for all. Tom
  6. I'm using Retrospect Multi Server 7.6.123 with 7.5 clients on workstations running Windows XP. I found out that current outlook.ost files are not being backed up for any Windows users. I have the Open File Backup option. What can I do to get the outlook.ost files to backup from each workstation? Tom

  9. I'm having some trouble with Active Directory on a Windows 2003 Server R2 box. I went to restore some files in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\config directory, and when selecting the files to restore, the config folder was empty except for the system profile folder which has files in it. The restored folder was the same. The missing files are listed below. Is it correct that Retrospect is not backing up these files, which I assume to be critical to the functioning of the server?   10. The files in C:\Windows\System 32\config don't show up in Configure > Volumes How can I restore selected files from this directory? Tom
  11. I'm backing up a Dell PowerEdge 1800 with Windows Server 2003 R2 installed on a RAID 5 disk array. Windows MultiServer is backing up this server from another server. The PowerEdge server being backed up is an Active Directory domain controller. The backup file security information from servers option is set on the backup script. Is there anything else I need to do to be able to restore the Dell server in the case of a serious crash? I hope I never need to do it, but I want to make sure everyting is covered. Thanks. Tom

  13. I'm using Retrospect Multiserver 7.5.285 on Windows Server 2003 to do a restore entire volume of a Windows XP SP2 computer. Everything restored OK, but when I reboot the Windows XP computer, I can't get to the desktop - I can only see the wallpaper. Pressing the Windows key does not bring up the Start menu bar. Task Manger will come up and shows 99% idle. I've logged out and back in which has helped in other situations. I've tried booting into Safe Mode and Last Known Good Configuration and the same problem occurs. Has anyone experienced this before? Thanks. Tom

    Hangs with 100% CPU while grooming disk

    I have a similar issue. I'm using 7.0.326 and a groom operation has been running on a 1 TB drive for over two days now with the CPU utilization close to 100%. If I had known how long grooming takes I would have started grooming before the drive hit the 931 GB limit set by the backup set definition. (188 GB is free.) I clicked on the Stop button over four hours ago and the grooming operation still hasn't stopped. It would be great if a disk-based backup set could be backed up to tape while the proactive backup to disk is running. I'm getting clear that there are three steps when using backup to disk then tape: backup to disk from Monday through Friday, groom on Saturday, backup to tape on Sunday, and hope that the weekend is enough time to get the jobs done.   15. I'm running Windows Multiserver 7, and recently switched to backing up to an external 1 TB disk drive attached to the server. I use a proactive backup script that continuously runs. I set up a transfer snapshot script to copy the snapshots from the disk backup set to a tape drive backup set, but it can only run when the proactive script isn't running, as they both want access to the disk-based backup set. Is there a way to have both the proactive to disk, and the snapshot transfer to tape scripts running at the same time, or perhaps in different time slots?   16. We're running Retrospect 6.5 server for Windows that backs up all clients except for one Windows XP SP 1 fully-patched computer. I add the client for this computer to the client list, select the client and click on the Tools tab for the client, and get a "Client Connection Closing..." message. I then have to force quit Retrospect. Client 6.0 is installed on the Windows XP computer. The Windows XP computer functions fine in all other TCP/IP functions - email, Web browsing, etc. I've moved the Windows XP computer to a new location to try a different wire - same result. Internet firewall is not running. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the client. (By the way - where can I find a Windows 6.5 client installer?) When I try an immediate backup of the Windows XP computer, I get an error 517. Reboot the client and get the same thing. Is there a way to get a deeper look at that is going on with the client when the server tries to connect? Thanks.
  17. We're running Retrospect 4.3 on a Mac running OS 8.6. We back up a lot of Macs and PC's with client 5.6. One of the PC's running client 5.6 on Windows XP. We haven't been able to back it up for a long time becuase of the following error: Sorry, can't connect to client Error 519 (Network communication failed) We've uninstalled and reinstalled the Window client, and moved the computer to a different location to eliminate network wiring as a cause. When we go to Configure, Clients, we have trouble connecting to the client because of error 541 some of the time. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Tom
  18. This tape drive is supported - it's in the hardware compatibity guide as an "Dell PowerVault 100T DDS-4" "ARCHIVE Python 06408-XXX" is what is displayed in Windows' Device Manager listing. You would probably increase sales if you cross-referenced the internal drive name as well as the OEM drive name. Tom
  19. I have a Dell PowerEdge server with an ARCHIVE Python 06408-XXX DDS tape drive. This drive is not listed in the Hardware Guide. Does anybody know if Retrospect is compatible with it? Thanks. Tom
