    Many Sharing Violations with v7.7

There are separate issues: The Open File Backup license and enabling it as a Backup option are required to back up certain files that are opened most of the time. It appears that Retrospect isn't running from an account in the Administrator group. That is required in order to use Microsoft VSS to backup system state (including registry, etc.). See the comments above.

E-mail Notification Not Working in 8.1

Scillonian, we are investigating. CAPRI, please provide similar screenshot as Scillonian did. Thanks.
  8. Thanks. Forwarded to Engineering to investigate.
  9. Please clarify what you mean by "Clients [?] button". If you are referring to http://retrospect.com/en/documentation, 8.1's PDF button and 10.1 PDF button do work and provide correct contents.

    Retrospect 10.1 and NAS Shares

Please navigate to Sources > All > select the problematic share > Summary, and share the entire Console screenshot. Is "Share2" a different but valid share next to "Share1" on your NAS? If "Share1" and "Share2" aren't the actual share names, please provide the actual name of the share you intend to add, and of the share Retrospect actually added.
  11. To reduce confusion, for Retrospect 10.1.0 (221) any form of immediate backup invoked by manually clicking a Run button will skip Instant Scan, regardless of whether Instant Scan is running on the backup source computer or not. "Using Instant Scan" won't appear in the log in that case. We are continuing to monitor feedback on Instant Scan and other features to provide solution and future product improvements. For Retrospect 10.0 release and subsequent pre-releases, Instant Scan can be disabled as mentioned above.
  12. First of all, sorry for the troubles you folks are experiencing. To enable/disable Instant Scan, you would do so on the backup source computer. For client-based backup, change Instant Scan on the client computer. For local backup, change Instant Scan on the Retrospect server computer. To disable Instant Scan on the backup source computer. Below are the relevant steps. We are also updating online documentation early next week based on customers' experience on the forum and via Support. 1. Some of our customers have been using the -w option with launchctl, thereby having Mac OS overriding Retrospect's control and also affecting Retrospect installation/upgrade. In that case, first undo the -w option. 1.1) Open the Terminal application, enter the following, and look for "com.retrospect.retroisa": sudo more /private/var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd/overrides.plist 1.2) To remove this setting, open the Terminal application and enter the following: sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Delete :com.retrospect.retroisa" /private/var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd/overrides.plist 2. The command below unloads Instant Scan for the current Mac OS session. Instant Scan will be reloaded after reboot. sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.retrospect.retroisa.plist 3. To prevent Instant Scan from being reloaded after reboot: sudo defaults write /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.retrospect.retroisa Disabled -bool true
  13. Chris, can you try ClearAllDevices=1 as described (with caveats) here? Otherwise, it would be helpful to set SetDevicesLogging=3 in retro.ini, restart the Engine using the Retrospect preference pane in System Preferences, and please send us the operations_log.utx file.
  14. We do understand customer concerns about information in Console not being always up-to-date, and we have been investing efforts improving it with every release. This is not a justification, and only as FYI: Because Console is designed to be able to run on separate computer from Retrospect Engine, and because certain Engine information takes longer to retrieve, indeed there is significant effort within Console caching Engine information.
  15. We will reconsider (no promise at this point). We are currently planning UI overhaul for both Windows and Mac.
  16. Is the recycled media set a Tape, File or Disk? - Do you mean a File or Disk media set (residing on external hard drive) still "beach ball" when you try preview on restore? - In Media Sets > select that media set on external drive > Verify, does Verify complete successfully? - What version of Retrospect was used to create/backup to that media set on external drive? Among the 2 recent backups (first one with 24 GB and second with 106 files), is Thorough Verification or Media Verification selected?
  17. This works for me on 10.1.0 (221). What version of Console are you using?
  18. Compared to 10.1.0 (187), the official 10.1.0 (221) release has further efficiency improvements in Instant Scan. We are monitoring customer feedback, and have further improvements and features planned.
  19. The -w option can cause the symptom you described, because it overrides Retrospect's control of Instant Scan. Apple's documentation also says: "In previous versions, this option would modify the [in this Retrospect's] configuration file. Now the state of the Disabled key is stored elsewhere on-disk." We are evaluating what steps are safe enough to post on our knowledge base to undo the -w option.
  20. We see your Support ticket and Engineering is looking into this escalated issue.
  21. For Instant Scan the goal is for it to be as transparent (invisible part of the "kernel" of Retrospect) as possible while simply making the scan phase of backups faster, so that users don't need to be aware of and don't need to manage Instant Scan. We have been listening to customer feedback here and through Support, with additional improvements and features planned towards that goal.
  22. Specifically for Instant Scan, the goal is for it to be as transparent as possible while simply making the scan phase of backups faster. We have additional improvements and features planned towards that goal. Improvements on the overall documentation are done in phases. The just completed phase focused on: - bringing them online at http://retrospect.com/en/documentation - integrating relevant parts from the addendum into the user's guide - providing PDF and ePub (iBook) formats

Bad backup set header if password protected

Did you use "Password only (no encryption)", which shouldn't change backup speed? If using password with encryption, backup will be slower because encryption is CPU intensive. Another factor is trying a different BluRay or DVD burner with different brand of media.

    run retrospect from command line

Was Retrospect running before the machine sleeps, or was it terminated? When the machine wakes up, is Retrospect somehow relaunched?
  25. Are the drives mapped from the Compellent storage the backup sources? Error -642 can occur due to problems accessing the backup set, or its catalog file which by default is on the Retrospect server's OS volume. In your case, where are the backup set and catalog stored on? And what are the main differences between the new VM (with backup error) and another VM (no backup error)? Are they on separate VM hosts with separate (instead of sharing) the same storage and network?
