  1. Thanks to Disegno Group's and peternlewis' patience in working with us, we have reproduced this issue and is testing a fix. We expect the fix to be included in the next free update. Background: During the "Building snapshot" phase, (to ensure correct restore) Retrospect is backing up Mac HFS file system's ACLs and extended attributes for every folder in the backup source / favorite, regardless of selectors. Most folders don't have ACLs and extended attributes. Some versions of the Apple developer tools do create the /Users/_UserNameHere_/Library/Developer/Shared/Documentation/DocSets folder which may contain 10,000+ folders with ACLs and/or extended attributes. Cause: Compared to the Retrospect Windows Engine, the Retrospect Mac Engine has some degree of inefficiency specifically when backing the ACLs and extended attributes for folders from a Retrospect Client (not local HFS volume). This inefficiency is amplified when the Client is connected via WiFi. Preliminary improvement: After tuning the related code, on some internal test systems including my primary Mac, we are seeing significant improvements in preliminary testing specific to Mac Engine's "Building snapshot..." phase for Mac Client with large number of folders that have ACLs and/or extended attributes. We are in the process of additional performance and regression testing. The improvement helps reduce overall backup time and targets the "Building snapshot..." phase specifically with folders meeting the mentioned criteria, and doesn't accelerate other phases of the backup process. Applicable cases: To see if your Mac Client would benefit from the upcoming improvement, run the following command in the Terminal window of the Mac Client computer. The preliminary estimate of time savings would be the result from the command line x 0.2 seconds for Client on WiFi. The savings when processing 10,000 folders meeting the mentioned criteria for Client on WiFi would be over half an hour. There will also be savings but to a smaller degree for Client on ethernet. sudo find _YourBackupSourcePathHere_ -type d -exec ls -dlF {} \; | grep '^d.........[@+]' | wc -l
  2. This is on our to do list, after we make several related changes to make this feasible.
  3. This issue is frequently raised by customers, we are actively working on exporting and importing the most important contents from/to the config file.
  4. After changing the logging levels and restarting the engine as described in the KB link, does the log not show additional info before the error -1100?

E-mail Notification Not Working in 8.1

    - Does moving :26 from User Name to Outgoing Mail Server work? - If not, how about using User Name without the + character?
  6. Thanks for helping confirming the workaround. We are working on fixing it such that what used to work should continue to work.

Mac Retro 902/Client 902: Lost Client

The client showing "Waiting for Retrospect login" means it is waiting for a Retrospect server to add it as a source. If a client has previously been added by a server already and then subsequently shows "Waiting for Retrospect login", retroclient.state being corrupted is one of the more likely cause. To check for other possibilities, between the time when the client was working and the later time when it shows "Waiting for Retrospect login": - Did you use Console to change that client/source's password? - Has the /Library/Preferences folder or the retroclient.state file located there been restored using Retrospect, or been modified by other apps?
  8. This is bug 3692 and will be fixed in the next free update.
  9. Understood. This is one of the most frequently raised issues and high on our priority list to address.

    VMware Agent

Adding one vCenter requires one Retrospect VMware add-on license. That enables backup of up to 100 VMs managed by that vCenter server.

Specifically for error -592, please share a screenshot of Retrospect's Console > Preferences > E-mail screen.
  12. Thanks. We can reproduce it now. Can you please try the workaround of using semicolon (without leading or following space) instead of comma?
  13. Appclicks is the service we use for tracking anonymous system profile information. When invoking the Retrospect Console the first time you can opt-in or opt-out to "Help improve Retrospect". You can also change your opt preferences at any time in Preferences > Console. When enabled, Retrospect tracks anonymous information such as version of OS, # and types (but not contents) of media sets, etc. When disabled, Retrospect sends an opt-out event to Appclicks and then stops tracking.
  14. One workaround until we re-enable that scenario is to create Proactive Backup script, which does use Instant Scan (if enabled on the backup source computer) and should run almost immediately in your case. Subsequent proactive backup won't proceed if there is no media, or if you uncheck all sources from the proactive script. Instant Scan is an important step towards several related backup acceleration features on our roadmap. We appreciate customer interests and feedback in the process.

    Backing up on-modified files

When determining if a file on an HFS volume has changed since it was last backed up, Retrospect considers: - file name (case sensitive) - creation date - modification date - file size - resource fork size (shown by: ls -l yourFileName/..namedfork/rsrc) - attribute modification date (if that option is enabled)
  16. Fair points. We did weigh a number of trade-offs before deciding on the behavior for 10.1.0 (221). And we also look forward to delivering additional optimizations and features on our roadmap.
  17. We are addressing the issues in phases, along with new features that the market is demanding. Will share more as we get closer to releasing batches of significant improvements over time.

    VMware Agent

With the Retrospect VMware add-on: * During backup Retrospect server would directly access the backup source VM's volume(s) which are mounted on the Retrospect server computer by VMware. It is a little bit like using Retrospect server to "locally" (i.e. without going through Retrospect Client) backup a network share. * VM is backed up one at a time. We do have improvements planned for several areas regarding backing up VMs. The performance advantages over Client-based backup come from: * Avoiding Retrospect Client's CPU, storage and network load on the VM * Shortening storage and network IO to between the Retrospect Server and the VMware host storage Trials are available: * 45-day trial license for Retrospect Multi Server 8.1, which includes the VMware add-on: http://retrospect.com/en/store/try * Trial license for just the VMware add-on for already-licensed Retrospect Multi/Single Server 8.1: mailto:sales@retrospect.com
  19. Re: To address(es): Everytime we filled the field with our (formerly perfectly working) two mail-addresses, the log shows error -597( mail server not found) So far we can't reproduce this issue. - Other than those generated by "Send Test E-mail", are you not getting any email notifications at all in this case? - If you restart the Engine and then restart Console, do the E-mail preferences look correct while still getting no email? - Please include screenshot showing the E-mail preferences screen while the cursor is in the "To address(es):" field showing how the first address is separated from the second.

E-mail Notification Not Working in 8.1

Sorry for the inconvenience this caused you. It is bug 3684 and we are working on a fix as we speak.
  21. I should have elaborated. In light of customer interests and as well as concerns about Instant Scan, 10.1.0 (221) includes multiple improvements for: - optimizations in processing file system change events - throttling CPU consumption Instant Scan processes file system changes about every 5 minutes. Considering use cases where customers make file system changes and quickly start manual backup to protect those changes, 10.1.0 (221) bypasses Instant Scan for such manually started back ups. We do have additional phases of further performance and resource optimizations planned for this area and will share more as we get closer to each phase.
