    Silent failures??

I use our local MSoft exchange server. SMTP is a standard protocol, I wonder if/why Retrospect would have problems with it?

    Silent failures??

Yes - I was mostly noting that there were no relevant entries in the Events log. I did setup Email notices on all events, I'll see if I get anything...

    Silent failures??

Thanks; I just did an upgrade to 9.5, same situation. Task Manager shows (retroisarun, Retrospect, retrorun, RetroISA) all running. Event Log shows this (on test email): The description for Event ID 2 from source Retrospect cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: + Retrospect version Launched at 9/16/2014 12:29 PM The specified resource type cannot be found in the image file Just shows the program startup, nothing for the Email attempt.

    Silent failures??

Interesting, thanks - but it seems like it would be a workaround to a problem. Inspired by your note, I checked the preferences, and find that notices are enabled, but trying the send test email fails; "Email Notification failed; Error -530, backup client not found" I am not sure what this means (or a cure), since it just completed two backups. No entry in the logs (History, events) about this. Even so, seems like even this error could be sent by email?

    Silent failures??

Several times I have opened Retrospect (Pro 9.0) and found that it reports a last backup of a month or more ago. When I open it, it starts doing a backup, but why does it fail silently, and how can I get it to at least inform me when it has some problem and fails? Then I'll watch it for a few days or weeks and it progresses properly, daily incremental and weekly backups.

How to limit size of backups - Grooming?

Thanks - I don't see that option, can you indicate where it is? And Grooming - what does it do? I ran a grooming script, no obvious impact. I was expecting the script to have some options, how much to get rid of, etc, but didn't get any such options in creating it.
  7. I have a disk that I use for backups, and want to limit the amount of size used by Retrospect. Do I need to create a partition on it, or is there some parameter I can use. Right now it is filling up a 160GB external disk, which I'd like to share with some other backups. I saw the "grooming" option, and how to make a script that will groom, but no informationon what that means. What will my grooming script do when it runs? I also saw that I can "forget snapshots' in a backup set, but what does that mean? I don't need to keep many versions of a file over a year, but don't want to delete some snapshot that may contain the only backed up copy of a file either. With MSoft backup, I can give it a maximum backup file size, and it will manage versions within that limit. Any way to do that with Retrospect?
