Upgrade from Retrospect 7.6 to 8?

Upgrading Retrospect Professional from 7.7 to 8 has worked for me. Just to be on the safe side I did backup my Backup Sets and configuration before the upgrade just in case something went wrong. I have not upgraded any client licenses though because of the increased number of included client licenses. Hope this is helpfull.

Backup Sets Not Listed In Alphabetical Order

Unfortunately any new backup sets created are added after the existing ones.

Backup Sets Not Listed In Alphabetical Order

I noticed this as well. The only (less than ideal) workaround for this I have found is to forget all the backup sets and then reopen the catalog files (which on my system are not deleted when you forget the backup set) in the order I want them to appear.

    Spurious Copies

I have also noticed that certain clients (and NAS shares) seem more prone to this than others and across different operating systems, Windows XP then Windows 7, on the same client. Interestingly the backup server has never had this problem when it backs itself up. It has occurred to me that these chunks of unchanged files appear to consist of complete folders/directories of files and not odd random files within a folder/directory. Is this what you are seeing too?

    Spurious Copies

I've just experienced similar with Retrospect Professional 7.7.562 but have had this happen since 5.x (5.6 I think) when I first started using Retrospect Professional. In this most recent case I have a script that backs-up a network share to one of two backup sets which I alternate between. Backup to one of the backup sets decided to recopy a ~20GB chunk of unchanged files. The interesting thing is that a backup to the other backup set did not see this chunk of files as changed and hence they were not copied. My usual solution to this in the past has been recycle the backup set and start again. However these days with most of my backup sets in the hundreds of gigabytes I tend just to live with it. Out of curiosity when this happened a while back while using 7.5.x I groomed out the last two snapshots/backups from the backup set then ran the backup again. This time the unchanged files were not copied. (The files were in the backup set from when it was created several months earlier.) Could it be there is some subtle corruption of the catalog file causing this?

Error -557 ( Transaction Already Complete)

Hi Is the "T-36: main: transaction terminated by PDS exception" message related to this bug or something different? I have two clients, both 32-bit, that have this message under 7.7.533 that didn't under 7.7.341. A third client running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit gives no errors. (I'm using Retrospect Professional.) The log entries for the two clients are: 2011-03-09 09:22:33: Copying Pushka-NB Windows 7 Home Premium (C:)... on Pushka-NB T-36: main: transaction terminated by PDS exception Can't back up Removable Storage Manager, error -557 ( transaction already complete) T-44: MapError: unknown Windows error -2,147,217,405 T-44: W2dbWMIDbOp: pWMIRep->BackupREGDB failed, osErr -2147217405, error -1001 Can't back up WMI Repository, error 76657252 ( unknown) 2011-03-09 09:41:33: Copying Snowball-VM XP Professional (C:)... on Snowball-VM T-36: main: transaction terminated by PDS exception 2011-03-14 09:13:50: Copying Pushka-NB Windows 7 Home Premium (C:)... on Pushka-NB T-36: main: transaction terminated by PDS exception T-44: MapError: unknown Windows error -2,147,217,405 T-44: W2dbWMIDbOp: pWMIRep->BackupREGDB failed, osErr -2147217405, error -1001 Can't back up WMI Repository, error 72462948 ( unknown) 2011-03-14 09:25:54: Copying Snowball-VM XP Professional (C:)... on Snowball-VM T-36: main: transaction terminated by PDS exception Can't back up Removable Storage Manager, error -557 ( transaction already complete) 2011-03-18 10:18:55: Copying Pushka-NB Windows 7 Home Premium (C:)... on Pushka-NB T-36: main: transaction terminated by PDS exception T-44: MapError: unknown Windows error -2,147,217,405 T-44: W2dbWMIDbOp: pWMIRep->BackupREGDB failed, osErr -2147217405, error -1001 Can't back up WMI Repository, error 72594020 ( unknown) 2011-03-18 10:30:26: Copying Snowball-VM XP Professional (C:)... on Snowball-VM T-36: main: transaction terminated by PDS exception Can't back up Removable Storage Manager, error -557 ( transaction already complete) The first backup was with both clients on 7.7.106, the second backup with both on 7.7.114 and the third backup with Pushka-NB on 7.7.106 and Snowball-VM on 7.7.114. I'll roll back Retrospect Professional back to 7.7.341 and run another backup in a day or so to see if the other errors besides -557 go away. Regards, John >^-.-^<
