    1TB Backup File Limit?

I started using Retrospect well before Window 8, and at the time my license was limited to File Backup sets. But I'll look at switching over, thanks.

    1TB Backup File Limit?

Does version 12 still have a 1T limit on backup files? Thanks.

Vista upgrade - no new client?

With Win XP clients, I could see the server sit on "Registry" for a minute or so, and the client machine would basically freeze. I'm not seeing that with the Vista client. Is there some way for me to feel assured that the system state of the registry, etc., is being backed up on a Vista client? Thanks.
  4. I updated to the new version of Retrospect (I'm running single server disk to disk), and was surprised there wasn't a new client update. I haven't upgraded the server to Vista yet, but I do have a Vista client running. Is backup of the system information (registry, etc) from a Vista client occuring correctly? I'm seeing the following in the log: File "C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\COMPONENTS": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\DEFAULT": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SAM": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SECURITY": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SOFTWARE": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SYSTEM": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup\EtwRTDiagLog.etl": can't read, error -1017 (insufficient permissions) File "C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup\EtwRTEventLog-Application.etl": can't read, error -1017 (insufficient permissions) File "C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup\EtwRTEventLog-System.etl": can't read, error -1017 (insufficient permissions) File "C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup\EtwRTEventlog-Security.etl": can't read, error -1017 (insufficient permissions) Thanks.

    Retroclient dying on startup

I had the disk in a laptop die and had to replace it, and use the manufacturers recovery disk to reinstall WinXP/etc. I then installed the Retrospect client (6.0, straight off the web site.) But every time I try and start the service, I get a Windows error that it terminated, and retroclient isn't running, and of course the port isn't opened. Looking at the data it wants to send to Microsoft about the failure, the Error signature says: App: retroclient.exe AppVer: 6.0.110.0 ModName: ntdll.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.1217 Offset: 00025a58 I've uninstalled/reinstalled several times, checked versions, etc. ICF isn't configured. All other networking is working fine. No personal firewalls installed, just the factory image of the machine (which gave me no problems the first time I installed the client.) Anyone have any suggestions of what else I can look at? Thanks! eric

    Retrospect 6.5 Pro REMOVES functionality

It wasn't a bug, at least in my case. 6.0 did break out the functionality as an add-on, but existing customers of 5.x were grandfathered, since the product had that functionality when they bought it. But, I just got off the phone with customer support trying to upgrade, and at least the person I talked to was insistent that Dantz was not going to grandfather this going forward, that I would have to upgrade to the much more expensive single server product to be able to get the functionality I already have. I asked for a call back from the manager to see if this was really the case.

    client locking up

Both the client and server on running on Win XP Pro. The client version is 6.0, as is the server (latest build). I've managed to work around the problem - my machine came with some software from ProactivIT that monitors process failures. I disabled that, and now backups run properly again on that client. Since the ProactivIT software had been on there for the last year while everything was running properly, it's not clear what suddenly changed, or why the client was causing the ProactivIT software to activate. (Maybe the breakpoint mentioned by the earlier post?) Anyway, I've resolved the problem for now. Thanks. Eric

    client locking up

I'm running pro 6.x, backing up several clients. All has been going well for many months. Today, one computer now hangs when its first volume is finished backing up. Retrospect shows that it is "Closing" the volume. I've tried this several times, and using TaskManager, I can see that on the client machine, at the moment it hangs, the only thing running is retroclient.exe. I had installed DirectX 9 on this machine, so I used system restore to go back to a prior save point, but the problem remains. Any suggestions, or things to try, to resolve this? Thanks. Eric

    Matching

Very interesting, learn something new every day! I dug around, and can see the difference by comparing the snapshot with the session for a new backup set of a few clients, after letting the clients do "full" backups. There doesn't see to be any easy way (report, mention in log file, etc) of measuring what is going on here, is there? It would make it easier to plan backup space usage, particularly when doing upgrades of software. Anyway, thanks for helping me through this!

    Matching

That's interesting, since I also email'ed tech support about this, and the reply was that no, it doesn't do matching across client computers. That certainly seems to jive with my experience that if I upgrade Office or install a new application on a few machines, each of those machines seems to have a larger backup next time, reflecting the new files. The blurb about 6.0 says: Save Precious Media Space Hard drives hold a lot of data. To optimize backups, Retrospect recognizes identical files on one or more computers and backs up just one copy. So if I install a software package (say MS Office) on multiple client machines, the files will only be stored once in a backup set? If that is correct, is this new in 6.0? Thanks. Eric

    Backup Server Gone?

One final followup. I called and although there was a wait for someone to be available, once I got through, everything went very smoothly. Thanks again! Eric

    Backup Server Gone?

I had checked out the upgrade wizard already, but just gave it another shot and it still quotes me the prices I had mentioned - either upgrade to Pro (presumably without Proactive Client) or spend much more money to go to single server and the proactive client add on. Based on your reply, I'm hopeful that calling customer service leads to a better solution. Thanks. Eric

    Backup Server Gone?

I currently have Desktop 5.6 and 5 client licenses, and use the Backup Server feature to backup a small network. Has this feature been dropped from 6.0, and replaced by the Proactive Client Backup option in the single and multi-server versions? If so, I'm looking at a >$1000 upgrade, several times what I initially paid for the product!? Thanks for any insights! Eric
