  1. The answer to your question was File BackupSet. ie. I have external hard drives that I back my stuff up to not tape drives so I assume File Backupset is the best choice.
  2. So I'm running 6.x in snow leopard and when I'm creating my script the panels get into a state where you cannot activate anything. All you hear is beeps as you try to click the Panel where you want the Backup stored Choose a Folder : Retrospect you cannot actually do from this point without getting Beeps Update: It would appear that this is because of 64 bit kernel mode as it doesn't do this in 32 bit mode.
  3. Is it possible to store the catalog in a different place than where the backup set is stored?
  4. There seems to be a consistent pattern. I've got Two scripts and Two media sources. The both use the same source but are backups Each had a media set on a different volume. If I rebuild the first one so that it is recataloging there's no way I can get the task to recatalog the second one to be queue in waiting state. It never shows up anywhere after it's been "submitted"
  5. So now Retrospect was spinning and I had to Force Quit is and now upon restart it shows only one of my media sets. None of the other 3 media sets are known to it. It shows 4 scripts there should be 4 It shows the right number of sources It shows only 1 media set when there should be 4 I've just clicked "Locate" and it's spinning. Why is it spinning? How hard is it to bring up a panel to tell it what to "Locate" Now I've force quit the application again and it has nothing. Shows 127.0.0.1 and "Not Connected" nothing more. Upon a restart of machine it's now showing me all the media sets it should.

    Edit Member? What to click?

I'm suggesting that it shouldn't allow me to click on things in the first place that it knows are blatantly wrong.
  7. So, I'm currently running a Backup (small task). I'm also trying to start a rebuild of a mediaset (different member) that has the same root volume as it's source. The Backup task is a favourite folder on the same volume. Now the problem I have is that all the panels let you finish ie. after I tell it where I want the catalog it appears as if everything will happen when it should. Then if I go to look at Activities there's no Recatalog in either Running or Waiting so I have no idea if it's going to run or not. Also, When I'm running the first task there seems to be unnecessary locking or single threaded behaviour because I have to wait a long time before I the panel first pops up and it also takes a long time thereafter before I can tell it where the catalog is. So I've setup two mediasets to be rebuilt and nowhere in the Activities does it show me that they will run in the future.
  8. What does it have to do when it performs a Rebuild of the Member to recatalog? This step seems to take a very long time. I'm wondering if I should get out my 80 GB solid state disk and use that for storing catalogs to speed things up a little bit?

    Edit Member? What to click?

As a programmer I find it interesting that it's even possible to select anything until the top folder in the GUI. That shouldn't be possible. If you have multiple members and I assume these can span different drives etc then I see the need to tell it where they are but I shouldn't necessarily be allowed to select what clearly isn't valid in the first place.

    Edit Member? What to click?

No surprisingly after this event the Media Set B has lost all knowledge of who it's members are again. Version 8.1 (build 622) I simply don't understand why this application loses knowledge of who it's members are. I'm looking at the Mediaset and it shows me that it's Red and it tells me 87 GB used and 9 KB yet it cannot tell me who the members are for that media set. Boggles the mind. Here's what's on the console when I try to reattach an existing member to the Mediaset 10/22/09 7:15:00 PM Retrospect[4272] Connected to 127.0.0.1:22024, current version = 8 10/22/09 7:15:08 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSet::setBackupSet exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:15:08 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSet::setBackupSet exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:17:52 PM Retrospect[4272] ServerBrowseController::initView exception: RefVolume::Connect {Macintosh SSD} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:18:09 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSetsController::clickOkForAddDiskMember exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:18:09 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSet::setBackupSet exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:18:09 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSet::setBackupSet exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:18:12 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSetsController::clickOkForAddDiskMember exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:18:15 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSet::setBackupSet exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:18:15 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSet::setBackupSet exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:18:17 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSetsController::clickOkForAddDiskMember exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:18:21 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSet::setBackupSet exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:18:21 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSet::setBackupSet exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:18:21 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSetsController::clickOkForAddDiskMember exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:18:26 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSetsController::clickOkForAddDiskMember exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:18:27 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSet::setBackupSet exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 7:18:27 PM Retrospect[4272] BackupSet::setBackupSet exception: {MacBook Pro Nightly B} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure Please make it easier to reattach members that have been lost from the mediaset. If I want this attached I'm forced to incur a full rebuild on the catalog just to get this to be known which takes a very long time indeed. Preferably explain why the mediaset consistently loses record of who it's members are.
  11. When you edit a member to increase it's percentage used what are you suppose to click? If I select a media set and then select edit member the edit member panel pops up with no context whatsoever. If I then drill all the way down to the member of my disk set ie. 1-something and click "Save" nothing happens. If then processed to click ever parent up until the root of the volume and hitting "Save" each time nothing happens. 10/22/09 8:41:41 AM Retrospect[44585] BackupSetsController::clickOkForAddDiskMember exception: Invalid Path. The path should has subfolder(/Retrospect/MemberName/N-MemberName This is very poorly implemented. 1. It should know the media from the one I've chosen in the first place and it should be clear what I'm suppose to click on when I'm increasing the Use at most N GB or M percent. All I see on the console is 10/22/09 8:37:49 AM Retrospect[44585] ServerBrowseController::initView exception: RefVolume::Connect {Macintosh SSD} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/22/09 8:37:49 AM Retrospect[44585] ServerBrowseController::initView exception: RefVolume::Connect {Macintosh SSD} Resource Busy Currently the running script shows "Needs Media" and wants me to click "Choose Media" In my mind I should be asked to click on a member of a media set and then later tell you what member of the media set actually is. I should simply be able to click on the member click edit and edit the property. I shouldn't have to tell you what volume the media set is on already and I should have to tell you what the media set is again. You should already know it because I've selected it before I clicked it to edit it.
  12. Yes locally attached drive. Usually USB but just switched to FW800 for speed. Didn't change much. Console and Engine same computer. May reboot during the day Volume name is /Volumes/G-DRIVE
  13. They are mounted members from a disk set. Nothing special. I'm now recataloging to recover the members and I'd like to know why is it it can only do 33.1 MB/m over FW800. Is that a reasonable speed for this operation?
  14. And now this Media Set has lost all knowledge of who it's members are again. This is quite annoying because when this happens it loses it's schedule too which is also wrong. If a member set cannot figure out who it's members are just disable the schedule but don't just throw it away. When you lose a member from a media set and you try to repair the media set thru repair here's what you get in the console. 10/19/09 6:50:33 PM Retrospect[19560] ServerBrowseController::initView exception: RefVolume::Connect {Macintosh SSD} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/19/09 6:50:34 PM Retrospect[19560] ServerBrowseController::initView exception: RefVolume::Connect {Macintosh SSD} Bad Passowrd or Other Access Failure 10/19/09 6:50:54 PM Retrospect[19560] BackupSetsController::clickOkForRepairDiskMemberSelectSheet exception: RTDoGetRefDisksFiles error ... Not very informative. When I click on "add member" it never actually adds the member to the set either. This is not the first time the media set has lost all knowledge of who it's members are. --- and when you try to increase the percentage use for an existing member all it gives you is "An error occurred" in red when you've try to Edit the Member console shows 10/19/09 6:54:39 PM Retrospect[19560] BackupSetsController::clickOkForAddDiskMember exception: Invalid Path. The path should has subfolder(/Retrospect/MemberName/N-MemberName ... If this is the folder I'm suppose to pick then don't show me any other folders. Try to show only those things that I should pick from instead of children of those things that I can pick which is errors. In this case it wants me to pick the high level of the path so it shouldn't even bother showing me the lower levels of the path.
  15. What are you suppose to click on? Say I want to increase the percentage used... if I click on every path I can think of in that chooser nothing dismisses the panel when I click "Save" even when I click on the leave node of the the actual Member itself. ie. 1-MemberName
