  1. Can't track volumes, error -3421 (unknown). I recieve the above error when highligting Exchange Mailboxes and selecting the Mailboxes... button. I can select Exchange Server\First Storage Group and browse without a problem. I reviewed the preferences\security section and it's using the domain Admin account. I would think if everything is working well I could at least view mailboxes. I configured the Exchange backup set to backup the whole "Exchange Server". When I right mouse button click on Exchange Mailboxes Login As... I have "Use domain authentication with the appropriate domain, administrator, and password, but then it states "Sorry, authentication failed, please retry:" I even tried "Use current RBU information", and the same error displays. I am positive I have the right user information, but exchange mailbox access fails. As stated above, I can access the First Storage Group, so I would think if there were truly an authentication problem then it would exist throughout.
  2. Thanks for the feedback, but I have a previous backup that I do not remove. I have a valid backup from last week that I want to retain within the same backup set. So that is why I inquired if there is a problem with manually deleting the files from the failed backup.
  3. It appears our servers were manually shutdown in the middle of an Exchange IS disk backup, and I have approx. 30 backup files (partial backup) in the 1-Exchange Disk folder. I want to know if there is any problem simply deleting these files via Windows Explorer? I simply want to cleanup before initiating a new backup.

    Disk-to-Tape Backups

I wound up creating a grooming script as suggested. We conduct a mailstore backup every Friday night. If we need to restore for any reason we have no need to go beyond a week, so exchange progressive backups are not necessary nor efficient in this respect. A weekly recycle backup serves us much more efficiently.
  5. I have a question that you maybe able to assist me with. It pertains to backing up the information store to disk. I setup the backup set to groom to remove backups older than (1). It does not initiate automatically. I must manually initiate a groom session for it to work. I have other backup sets that automatically groom, but the Exchange backup set does not seem to do this. Is this the way it should be?

    Disk-to-Tape Backups

Thanks. I found the disk-to-tape document, and I am following those procedures. They recommend snapshot transfer. I am still trying to figure the difference between backup and snapshot tranfer. I assume the transger merely copies the disk backups and does not move them per say. I have never done this before, so that is why I ask this trivial question. Anyway, let me ask if I create a transfer snapshots backup for several disk backups, can I create a script to backup other data using the same backup set. In essence, it would append the backup data on the same tape that the transfer snapshots uses. We conduct application backups that I would also like to store off-site on a rotation basis (Backup Set A & , etc. I just want to make sure when a restore is necessary there are no complications. Thanks.

    Disk-to-Tape Backups

Basically I conduct several disk backups to different backup sets, and then I backup these disk backups to tape.
  9. Each weekend we initiate a disk-to-tape backup. I selected to backup instead of copy the disk backup files to tape. I am able to restore the disk backups without a problem. Is there a problem doing this?
  10. We use Retrospect 7.0 with the Exchange Agent. Every Friday night we backup the Exchange IS to disk. Our Exchange IS is approximately 30Gbs. Saturday nights we then backup this same information to tape for off-site storage. That works fine too, but there is a problem. The Exchange disk backup set is setup to groom older than two backups. However it does not automatically groom as other backup sets. I must manually initiate grooming of this backup set for it to work. Is this correct in that it will not auto groom or am I missing something?
