  1. Never mind, I had to go back several days and get an older config75.dat file and now I can get in. Thanks for your help!
  2. I was changing the administrator password on our SBS server 2003 Retrospect server and after changing the password in Retrospect and exiting then logging out and back in with the new password, when I try to restart Retrospect I get Retrospect has encountered a serious error: Assertion failure at "wdbd_sqlvol.cpp-133 I am running version 7.6 of Retrospect and SBS 2003 sp 1. Any idea what this error pertains to?
  3. Ok well I restored an older config75.dat by removing the Retrospect dir. But as soon as I use the restored config75.dat it gives me the assertion.
  4. I renamed my config75.dat to config75.dat.old It created a new one but still fails with the assert.
  5. I cannot launch retrospect and do not have a accessible copy of the config75.dat file since it is only backed up by retrospect. Also as far as I know there was no sql license being used. There are no errors in the event viewer btw. Any other suggestions?
  6. I have had this problem before the newest version of Retrospect but now it is an issue as the computer it is happening on needs to be backed up. What I am finding is one WinXP SP 2 computer on our network that has a nightly proactive backup done on it (running 7.6.107 client)is freezing the Retrospect backup system. It seems to do the first backup ok but after that when it tries to matching the backup on our NAS to the client. When I say freeze what is happening is the executing backup will just sit there saying matching and the backup set and use about %95+ of the cpu and never complete. You cannot stop the executing backup either. Other backups can run but do so a bit slower than usual due tot he load this lockup seems to be putting on the system. I can only stop the freeze by killing retrospect from the task manager. So far I can't find anything wrong with the client computer and it works fine other than the backup issue. Is there some sort of diagnostic or more verbose logging I can turn on that might help? Any suggestions are welcomed.
  7. Please it is critical this computer be backed up as it is the CEO of our company. Is there no suggestions on how to proceed?
  8. Recently I upgraded our Retrospect SBS 7.5 to 7.6 along with the clients. A couple machines are now reporting: Can't use Open File Backup option for Local Disk (C:) on , error -1017 (insufficient permissions) I have tried reinstalling the client and reinstalling the Volume Shadow copy service on the client. I have ensured that the vss (vssvc.exe) is present and set to Manual. Also RpcSs is set to automatic. Most other clients in the office are working fine. This didn't happen until the upgrade to 7.6. The client is WinXP SP2. The server is MS Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server SP1 Any idea what might be going on?
  9. Is there no diagnostics I can turn on, either on the client or server to narrow the issue down? I really need to start getting this computer backed up properly.
  10. Yes I do even when the open file backup is turned off.
  11. Thanks Robin, but how will I tell exactly what it was doing? I already know it was getting stuck saying: Matching Saying Remaining 0 files zero KB
  12. I turned off open file backup and it did not lock up but stalled and had to be stopped by the stop time. There were several errors reported with sharing violations and directories not found. 13. Does the use of simplecrypt interfere with efficient compression of data when using software compression? Secondly if I wanted to change a backup set from simplecrypt to password protected, is there an easy way to do this?
  14. It is Win2003 SBS standard SP1 . We have the Retrospect server Value pack installed on it as well, that includes open file backup addon btw. There is 3 Gigs of RAM on the server.
  15. I am not sure if this will help anyone here or not. I too could not figure out how to translate a typical GFS rotation to the way Retrospect 7.5 wants to do things. So I have rolled my own solution. I wanted a weekely offsite full backup of our complete Retrospect NAS housed backups. For that I have two full (2 tape) backup sets housed on DLT-S4 (800 Gig native) tapes. This backup takes a couple days to get through my 1.3 Terabyte backup with AES encryption on my Quantum Autoloader 3 unit. So one week I would do a full backup of all snapshots on full backup set A, and the next week I would do the same on full backup set B. For my daily incrementalish backups I do a recycle backup on Monday that does only the most recent set and each day my daily normal backup adds to this backup the most recent backups. I manage these in sets A and B as well. The daily A and B backups never get pulled out of my autochanger until I am ready to retire the media. The last full weekend backup of the month goes into a month end tape rotation as well. Unfortunately Retrospect does not seem to manage the rotation automatically and it takes me knowing a bit about what should go where, but so far it is working pretty well and offers some redundancy in case of problems. Not sure if this helps anyone, but I know it took me a while to wrap my head around how to do what I needed to do.

It would be nice if Retrospect could somehow differentiate between a client connected via a local vpn connection and a connection when on the road. Or alternatively have some easy way to easily take the client offline and bring it back online. I know that there is a on/off in the client options but there is no good visual indication to remind you that you are offline that I know of. In our operations here, our wireless is the main way Notebooks connect to our office network. For security reasons the wireless does not get you into our internal network and VPN has to be used to actually connect.
