  1. Thanks for your quick response. No, I do not have the open file backup option. Do I need to worry about this? Should I try to find out from Symantec why these files would be being deleted?
  2. I use Retropect Single server in a fairly small network environment. One server, 7 clients. On Wednesday, I do a recycle backup of all machines on the network. Every other night, I backup only the files that have changed. Normally, I get very few errors. See portion of Log Below. ================================================= - 02/14/2010 9:00:00 PM: Copying Local Disk (C:) File "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\db\sem5.db": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\db\sem5.log": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat.LOG": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\WINDOWS\Temp\asat0000.tmp": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\WINDOWS\Temp\hsperfdata_SYSTEM\2304": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) 02/14/2010 9:13:41 PM: Snapshot stored, 68.1 MB 02/14/2010 9:14:16 PM: 4 execution errors Remaining: 6 files, 11.4 GB Completed: 811 files, 3.0 GB Performance: 312.5 MB/minute Duration: 00:14:16 (00:04:43 idle/loading/preparing) ================================================ However, once in a while, I get a TON of errors. The majority of the errors seem to be related to Symantec stuff, either Live update or endpoint protection. Can anyone wise me up? Thanks.
  3. I am getting this error during backups. I tried the fixes referenced in this MS KB article. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304101 It didn't work. First of all, the article alludes to Server 2003 and I am experiencing it with a XP client. One of the posts suggested modifying the registry on the client, but the article doesn't refer at all to XP. In fact when I try those fixes on my client, it screws up all the MS Office applications for that client, word doesn't work and excel doesn't work either. I am running Server 2003 running Retrospect, and an XP Client. I think the backup is working OK even though I get the error. See the log below. 12/16/2009 10:21:19 PM: Connected to P133 * Resolved container P133 to 1 volumes: Local Disk (C:) on P133 - 12/16/2009 10:21:19 PM: Copying Local Disk (C:) on P133 - 12/16/2009 11:23:25 PM: Verifying Local Disk (C:) on P133 - 12/17/2009 12:36:20 AM: Copying Local Disk (C:) on P133 File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_76616.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77475.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77477.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77479.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77481.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77483.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77485.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77487.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77489.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77491.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77493.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77495.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77497.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77499.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77501.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DataColl\CollectedData_77503.xml": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) File "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\systemprofile\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\systemprofile\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat.LOG": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Perflib_Perfdata_6f4.dat": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) Can't back up registry, error -1019 (not enough resources) 12/17/2009 1:56:43 AM: Snapshot stored, 24.4 MB 12/17/2009 1:57:05 AM: 3 execution errors Remaining: 19 files, 1,267 KB Completed: 71088 files, 29.9 GB Performance: 232.8 MB/minute Duration: 02:29:05 (00:17:54 idle/loading/preparing) Perhaps I don't even need to worry about it, it seems as if the backup is working, Lots of stuff gets backed up. I just would like to remove the error. Any ideas?
  4. I use Retrospect professional Single server edition. I have an Exabyte VXA tape unit. I have designated slot 10 as the cleaning tape. There is always a tape in it. I have configured Retrospect to clean the drive every 25 hours. I have configured to allow a cleaning tape to be used 25 times. There are at least 15 cleanings remaining. I have configured Retro to send me e-mail status messages. Normally I get messages similar to the one below. Date: 01/31/2007 A cleaning operation was requested for "Exabyte VXA DC, ID 3:3:0". It was used 25 hours since the previous cleaning request. Date: 01/31/2007 (Exabyte VXA DC, ID 3:3:0) : The tape in the drive is a cleaning cartridge. Date: 01/31/2007 Drive "Exabyte VXA DC, ID 3:3:0" was cleaned. Script: Weekly Progressive Backup Date: 01/31/2007 Script "Weekly Progressive Backup" completed with 4 errors (The log shows these errors to be compare or sharing errors on windows sys files. They do not trouble me, the backup was successful.) ============================================================ Last night I got the following. Date: 02/02/2007 (Exabyte VXA DC, ID 3:3:0) : The tape drive is due for routine cleaning: 1. Wait for the current operation to finish. 2. Then use a cleaning cartridge. Check the tape drive users manual for device specific cleaning instructions. Script: Weekly Progressive Backup Date: 02/02/2007 Script "Weekly Progressive Backup" completed with 7 errors Does anyone know why/what this means? Why the difference? What is it telling me? Why did I get the tape drive due for cleaning message all of the sudden?

    Normal Backup Behavior

I really misstated! I meant that I erase the tapes! I use 9 tapes in a Exabyte VXD unit. Normally, I do a recycle backup on Wed, then normals the rest of the week. The next Wednesday, I switch the tapes to a different set. I erase all the tapes to start with blank media. (Take the previous set off site.) The problem comes in if I forget to change the tapes on Wednesday. If I change them on Thursday for example, and still erase them, then when the normal backup takes place on Thursday evening, will it back up all the files? I understand that Normal means that it backs up only the files that have changed or are new since the last backup contained on the current tapes. If there are no backups on the current set of tapes, it should back up all the files right?

    Normal Backup Behavior

Do I have the right understanding of the way these work? If I do a normal backup to a set that has been erased, isn't that going to give me a backup of all the files since there is not a catalog relative to that set? My impression is, since nothing exists on that set, the software would see the need to backup all the files since they would all appear to be new? After the first day, a normal backup would simply back up the files that had changed or were new until the set was erased again. Am I right?
