Retrospect 7.7 Stops with No Warning

THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM. WHEN RETROSPECT STOPS WITHOUT WARNING ALL SCHEDULED BACKUPS STOP!!!! I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT RETROSPECT HAS NOT REPLIED OR ACKNOWLEDGED THIS PROBLEM. This is the second time this has happened and I would appreciate some help. I have some screen prints that would be helpful to resolve this problem but I do not see how to attach them. Bob Rand
  2. I have 4 data sets. Set A & B are complete backup of C: They run every other Sunday at 11:40 PM. A recycle backup is scheduled every 12 weeks with a 6 week shift between the recycle backup of sets A & B. I am backing up to a 320 GB local hard drive (G: Backup). About 4.4 GB are used on G: for nonretrospect backups. Set C & D are a backup of my files. They run every day at 10:50 PM for alternate weeks. On week 1, Set C has a recycle backup on Sunday at 11:30 PM and then runs a normal backup every day for week at 10:50 PM. On week 2, Set D has a recycle backup on Sunday at 11:30 and runs a normal backup every day for a week at 10:50 PM. This procedure ran without problem on Retrospect Express 7.6. With Retrospect 7.7, I would find Retrospect still running on Monday morning with no error message or other indication of a problem. When I opened retrospect I found Retrospect stopped because the target drive (G: Backup) was full. However drive G: was not full it had over 100 GB of spare space. I went to Configure/ Backup sets/ Backup Set A/ Properties/ Members/ 1-Backup Set on Backup/ Properties: The default setting for “Use at Most†was 50% (116 GB). I have increased “Use at Most†to 65% (151 GB) then to 95% (221 GB) and Retrospect still stops based on inadequate storage space. Drive G: (Backup) has over 100 GB free!!! I have to run a recycle backup to restore operation. I could not find information on backup media size restrictions / setup in the Retrospect User’s guide. I do not know if I am adjusting the correct variable or how to properly adjust it. I suspect Retrospect is using the file count to determine if the backup will fit the available space on the media. Retrospect does not seem to take into account that a normal backup only needs space for the changed files and/or does not take into consideration the compression factor. I have a Dell XPS 420 running Vista ultimate 32 bit. Any help would be appreciated. Bob Rand

Can't Use Open File Backup Error 1017

Thanks for your comment. I will try to check the log you suggested. Many of the Retrospect "Can’t Use Open File Backup Option - Insufficient Permissions" occur early Sunday morning when nothing is running. Can anyone comment on "Are the backups with errors valid for recovery?" Robert Rand
  4. See my 6-2-09 Post # 123222 Topic # 30827 Same Subject. Retrospect “Can't use Open File Backup option for Bob on OS (C:), Error -1017 (insufficient permissions)†I first reported this problem back in June. I had many Retrospect backup errors after installing Microsoft VISTA SP2. I did not get any help at that time. I have been looking on my own over the past months. I have found and fixed some things such as: Disk check of C: found and fixed some errors, a Microsoft update file had to be deleted and regenerated so that Microsoft update would work and I removed and reinstalled my F-Secure antivirus. I have tried to schedule F-Secure full computer scan for a period when Retrospect is not scheduled to run but have found F-Secure full computer scan has not run as scheduled. I have to run F-Secure manually. It runs manually without problem and no virus or malware have been found. System Data: I have 32 bit Microsoft Vista Ultimate. It is running on a Dell XPS420 with Q6600, 2.4GHZ quad processor that I purchased in December 2007. I have 4 GB @ 667 MHZ of memory (3.3 GB usable). I have a 256 MB ATI HD 2600 graphics card. I have a Dell Ultrasharp 22 inch monitor (1680 x 1050 pixels). I use F-Secure from Embarq for antivirus. I have MS Office Small Business 2007 and use Outlook for e-mail. Microsoft Works 8.5 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 came with the computer. I have 2 Optical drives E: CD-R/W & F DVD-R/W: a 320 SATA hard drive C: & D: and a 250 GB SATA hard drive G: for backup. I use Embarq DSL. Microsoft update is auto and all Microsoft software is current. Other programs such as F-Secure, Windows Defender, Retrospect etc. are up to date. Current Retrospect Auto Backup Setup: I run two automatic backups. I backup my user documents daily at 11:50 PM. I back up my complete computer weekly on Sunday at 11:40 PM. I have two backup sets for user documents so that I have one week of backups on set 1 then refresh set 2 and have one week of backups on set 2. In a similar manner. I have two backup sets for my full computer backup which alternate weekly and refresh every 6 weeks on a staggered schedule. All backups are to internal hard drive G. Current Retrospect Problem: In the period from 7/1/09 to 9/4/09 I have had 13 of 41 user documents backups with errors and 2 of 5 complete computer backups with errors. The backups with errors do not seem to have any pattern. (I was on vacation for about 3 weeks during this period so no Retrospect backups were done during that period.) Errors are always headed by “Can't use Open File Backup option for Bob on OS (C:), error -1017 (insufficient permissions)â€. Help Needed: Any help with “Can't use Open File Backup option for Bob on OS (C:), error -1017 (insufficient permissions)†would be appreciated. Are the backups with errors valid for recovery? Will Retrospect run on the new Microsoft Windows 7 64 bit? VISTA SP2 Many Errors

In the continuing saga of VISTA SP2, after reloading Embarq F-secure Retrospect ran once witout errors but then back to many errors. The Retrospect errors were simular to my initial error report. I did a check for windows updates and found 6 critical updates were needed. I requested the updates but they all failed. I looked at my windows update history and found these 6 critical updates had failed to install on 5 previous days. I tried to install them again and got error code 800700B. Search of the error code gave a help page giving steps to reset fsutil (Windows file system transaction log). I reset the log and restarted the computer. The 6 updates installed properly. Retrospect now runs without errors.

    VISTA SP2 Many Errors

I found that F-Secure was not running properly. On a manual scan of C:, D: & G:; F-Secure stopped scanning and could not be stopped. I had to End Task using the Windows Task Manager. This happened 3 times. I removed F-Secure and reloaded it from Embarq. Retrospect is now running withour errors. I am sure that all these problems were caused by the instalation of Vista SP2.

    VISTA SP2 Many Errors

Retrospect only ran without errors on 6-6-09. All backups after 6-6-09 have many errors. I may have F-Secure anti virus running a complete scan while retrospect is doing backups. I will reschedule the F-Secure start time and see if errors are eliminsted.

    VISTA SP2 Many Errors

After installing VISTA SP2 on 5/28/09, I started getting many errors and warnings (previously there was none) on a backup of user’s data. Typical errors are “insufficient permissions,†“sharing errorâ€, “file not found,†“didn’t compare.†Samples from 5/28/09; 33 errors, 3 warnings, backup took 3 minutes vs. normal of 5 to 6 minutes: ERROR: Can't use Open File Backup option for User Bob on OS (C:), error -1017 (insufficient permissions) ERROR: File "C:\Users\User Bob\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Recovery\Active\{82332A44-4BFA-11DE-9F96-001D0918C433}.dat": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) ERROR: File "C:\Users\User Bob\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies\Low\user_bob@quantserve[2].txt": can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found) ERROR: File "C:\Users\User Bob\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies\Low\index.dat": didn't compare On 6/1/09 I manually ran a Complete Recycle Backup of C: I got 140 errors and 31 warnings (normally none). SP2 was a large update. Everything else seems to work OK. Does anyone know how to fix this?
  10. I was finally able to sucessfully download Retrospect update 7.5.324. I monitored the status of my connection to my ISP and monitored the baud rate with Windows Task Manager / Networking during the download. The download took about 1.1 hours. There was no abervations seen. Thanks for the encouragement!!!
  11. I looked at Retrospect Activity Monitor / Events, I note: 1 ERROR 594 (server not available) and 4 ERROR 594 (lost communication with server). As stated previously, I routinely download large update files from Microsoft, McAfee and others without problems. I downloaded my origional Retrospect (7.5.251) without proplems. It was downloaded from wdc.com (Western Digital corporation). Somewhere in Retrospect I was able to see the actual cutoff point in the update downloads. They varied from 10% complete to 90% complete before the Retrospect download Failed.
  12. I am a new user. I have tried 4 times to update from Retrospect Express 7.5.251 to 7.5.324. Each time Retrospect has failed to complete the download. I have dialup and the download is estimated to take about 1.5 hours. The download has failed at various stages, for example the last download attempt failed after donloading about 10 MB of a 19 MB file. On previous attempts I think the failure was very close to the completion point. I have not had any problem downloading updates in the past. I regually update all software on my machine as soon as an update is available. When Retrospect fails, there is a bong sound and the Retrospect download screen shows DONE. However there is no update file downloaded. All the text in the box is gray. No log is available. After the download starts, I can see a file "QtrB.tmp" in the folder where the download is to be saved. However after Retopspect fails, the file "QtrB.tmp" is gone. I have also tried the "install udate" option but the result is the same, Retrospect failes to download the requested update. Please help!!!
