  1. I am using a Storevault S550 and have a SMB/CIFs share and whenever I duplicate the data from my Windows 2003 server to that share every file duplicate fails on the compare. The operation log reports the following File "D:\shares\PictureTransfer\somfile.dat": didn't compare However all the files are OK to the best of my knowledge. Can anyone provide insight on what attribute is failing on comparison? Thanks in advance.

    Snapshot creation time.

It turned out that there were ~7GB of storage reports that what was the culprit. My backups are now working just fine! Thanks for all your help!

    Snapshot creation time.

Yes it has some DC roles. The source drive is 50GB with 20GB used by 78,807 files. I am moving the DC roles off tonight.

    Snapshot creation time.

Ahem...10GB according to Retrospect. I ran NTBACKUP and it reports a System State of only 1GB. Thanks so much for you help!

    Snapshot creation time.

OK so here are my results Config 1 (Original) ==================================================== No NTFS permissions, backing up System State, enabled Source Snapshots Duration: 12:24:54 (12:21:49 idle/loading/preparing) Config 2 ==================================================== No NTFS permissions, backing up System State, disabled Source Snapshots Duration: 00:01:46 (00:01:24 idle/loading/preparing) Config 3 ==================================================== No NTFS permissions, NOT backing up System State, enabled Source Snapshots Duration: 00:04:51 (00:01:31 idle/loading/preparing) Config 4 ==================================================== Enabled NTFS permissions via defaults, NOT backing up System State, enabled Source Snapshots Duration: 00:23:02 (00:02:21 idle/loading/preparing) Summary ==================================================== So I can backup with a snapshot and security with reasonable results, see config 4, but loose my System State. So I really would like my System State backed upbut it seems when enabled this triggers and inordinate long snapshot. Any ideas on what I could do or change to reduce that? Thanks in advance!

    Snapshot creation time.

First off, Robin, thanks for the prompt help! Previously I had turned off NTFS permissions and still the same results. I will try the registry option now and post back with results. -MJB

    Snapshot creation time.

    I am using Windows 2003 Server R2 x64 Retrospect Multiserver 7.6.111
  8. So for some months now when creating s snapshot of my DC's C:\ drive the process would take 12 hours. I have watched the backup on execution it stays "stuck/busy" at "creating snapshot" for those 12 hours. I unchecked an option stated below and the execution script and it took less than 10 minutes to run the backup job. Execution -> Catalog File -> Save Source snapshots for restore I know the consequences of turning it off but what could be cause of this issue? Has anyone else had this experience? Bueller, Bueller, anyone, anyone! ;-) Thanks in advance,

    /var is 1 TB?!

I just upgraded to 7.5 and the readme mentioned my issue. It states this about RHEL 4 "In addition, after a default install of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, the file var/log/lastlog reports its size as over 1000 GB. This can cause problems when previewing operations within Retrospect and can also cause Retrospect to report that an operation requires more media than it actually needs. To avoid these problems, create or modify a selector to exclude this file from your backups of Red Had Enterprise Linux 4 clients." source: Retrospect 7.5 README.html I will create this selector and test and post back. Thanks! -Metro305
  10. My Linux server is running Retrospect Client for Red Hat Linux 6.5.108 and have /var as a backup volume and when my Windows 2003 Retrsopect 7.0.301 server performs a backup is reads /var as 1,700 GB to backup! Very bizarre. Code: - 2/2/2006 12:00:21 PM: Copying /var on LINUX-SERVER 2/2/2006 12:02:32 PM: Execution stopped by operator Remaining: 2121 files, 1,170.1 GB Completed: 9 files, 1.2 GB Performance: 608.1 MB/minute It is not possible since I only have 250GB RAID 1 for storage Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
  11. Thanks for the information. I hope they can speed things up somehow. I know if I have faster drives that would help. Again thanks! -MJB
  12. A little under 1.8 million files!! -MJB
  13. Good day all! Can I speed up the "building snapshot" process? I have defragmented my drives and added more memory and it still seems to take forever to build a snapshot. Look at this Code: - 1/12/2006 6:12:20 PM: Copying DATA on DATA (E:) 1/13/2006 1:57:36 AM: Snapshot stored, 944.9 MB 1/13/2006 2:02:20 AM: Execution completed successfully Completed: 25063 files, 5.1 GB Performance: 194.2 MB/minute Duration: 07:49:59 (07:23:33 idle/loading/preparing) Here are some technical details I have two identical servers a primary(production file server) and backup(Retrospect backup server). The backup server performs a duplicate job from the primary to itself. Afterwards we run the tape backup which takes anywhere from 9 -15 hours. Hardware/Software Details Pentium 4 2.8 533FSB 1GB DDR RAM 749.71 GB RAID 5 (4x200GB HDs) CERC ATA 100 4 CH RAID Dell Driver 6.41.2.32 Certance LTO-3 Cettance Driver 1.9.0.0 Adaptec 39320A Adaptec Driver 3.0.0.0 Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition Service Pack 1 (build 3790) Any help would be appreciated and how to improve this backup job or speed up/tweak Retrospect to reduce snapshot build time. -metro305
