    End of Month Processing

I have a daily backup running and would like to automate the following: After the daily backup on the first day of the month: 1) delete or groom the prveious monthly backup so that it is empty 2) transfer the daily backup to the now empty monthly backup and recycle the daily backup 3) rerun the daily backup I end up doing step 1 manually and have to recreate the monthly backup set each month. This is a pain and can lead to errors. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks/Hal

    Error 1017

I have had this problem for YEARS and have never gotten a good explanation or help in getting this to work. It is giving me this message on both the primary and secondary hard drives on my main computer that is running Retrospect. I do not get it on the two networked computers that are using the client to get backed up. They are an XP and Vista machines. My main system is XP. All have the latest of everything. Someone at Retrospect/EMC needs to address this.
  3. I want to move files from one directory to another on the same drive. Is there an easy way to do this without creating another backup set, then using Retrospect to copy the files over, and finally deleting the old backup set. I would like to just move the files in explorer and then edit the scripts to tell retrospect the new location. Is this possible? If so how. Thanks/Hal

    EHDD getting full

Nemo: Last question first. I think 7.5 is the same as far as usability goes. However it does have some additional features and I have found it more reliable. But if 7 is working for you I would see no need to upgrade. What you may want to do is change from what I assume your are doing - "Normal" backups to "Recycle" backups at some point. The recycle backup essentially deletes the old backup set and starts it fresh. I do this every month. My schedule is to do a normal backup every night. Then at the start of the month I do a recycle backup which starts things off fresh. I then copy the backup set to dvd for permanent storage. I hope that helps.

Cant get client to work: error 1101

Ami: Thanks. I just downloaded the latest version and it "seems" to be working. It sees the client and allowed my to schedule a backup. The only puzzling thing is that the new version is supposed to be 7.5.390 but when I go to my about box it says version 7.5.324!!! Thanks/Hal

Cant get client to work: error 1101

Amy: Sorry I was so rude as to not thank you for your reply. So a belated thanks for any help you can provide. Also, the other thing that may be relevant is that I installed the MccCaffee Anit-Virus from AOL switching from Norton. I disabled the firewall on both machines but have left the anti-virus running. I did however test it even with the anti-virus stopped and unloaded but not removed on both machines. Same result. Thanks again/Hal

Cant get client to work: error 1101

It occurs when I go to Configure Clients then select the client (JanesToshiba) then click on Volumes. I have tried removing the client spec and adding it back in. I have tried reinstalling the client on JanesToshiba. All to no avail. The only thing I have not tried is reinstalling Retrospect on my main computer. I don't see how that should help so I haven't done it yet. I have access to JanesToshiba from my computer via Windows Explorer. I can map her drive to my machine. I can back up most of her machine that way, but not the registry, the Documents and Settings or the Program Files directories as WinXP locks those from network access.

Cant get client to work: error 1101

I have not heard from anyone on this and I am unable to properly back up my wife's computer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks/Hal

retrospect pro and ftp?? can you do this.

You can back up files across a network in one of two ways: 1) using a Retrospet Client 2) adding the drive from the 2nd computer to your system (i.e. from Windows Explorer: Tools/Map Network Drive The first way will get you all files including protected files and the registry. NOWEVER I can not get it to work on my system. I have asked for help twice on this list about this but no one has responded. It used to work for me but I had to do a complete hard disk reinstall and now I can't use the client to backup my wifes machine. Note using method 2 you can not get to protected files such as the program directory or the "Documents and Settings" or the "Program Files" directories as Windows protects them from access across a network.

Cant get client to work: error 1101

Has anyone had a chance to look into the above? I would appreciate any suggestions as what to do next. Thanks/Hal
  11. I had a problem with my hard disk and did a clean restore. Retrospect no longer worked so I downloaded a a copy, installed it and put in the license so that it appears to be working correctly. I have had no problem backing up the hard drives on this main computer. When I try to add another computer I get the error "Cant track volumes, error - 1101 (file/directory not found). I removed the client software and reinstalled it. I can see and copy/delete files from over the network form the client computer with no problems. I have AOL anti-virus but have disabled all firewalls on both machines. The thing that drives me crazy is that Windows Explorer has no trouble seeing and providing access to the files on the client machine. So it does not appear to be a network problem. How do I get Retrospect to see the volume on the client machine. I am running 7.5.324 on the master and 7.5.116 on the client. I was able to do this before the reinstall. Thje license shows backup clients 2 pack - 1 used, 1 available. Thanks/Hal

    very slow client backup

Thanks. Upgraded to client 7.5.116 and to main 7.5.285. It seems to be running about twice as fast now. I will see how it does doing a full backup. Just teseted on a small incremental. Thanks again. Hal

    very slow client backup

I have a Toshiba laptop (2 ghz pentium M) connected via a cable to a NetGear WGR614 Router. It is running the 7.5 client. My main computer running 7.5 also cabled to the router is a Dell Dimension 3.2ghz p4. Both have 1gb of ram. I am trying to back up the Toshiba to 250gb drive on the Dell. It is taking forever. It has been running for 4+ hrs at 8.1mb/min (4.4gb so far) with 7.3 gb remaining and it is listed at 13+ hrs remaining. The Win Task Manager on the Toshiba is showing that it is using around 1% if the bandwidth. What is going on? Nothing else out of the ordinary is running on the Toshiba. It is showing 0 to about !0% cpu utilization. Plenty of memory. I am running Mozilla and little else on the Dell. It is showing 0 to 5% cpu utilization and around 1% network utilization. I dont see any collisions or other issues on the router. I ran etherial on the Dell and see no transmission errors. I had been trying to back the Toshiba up using wiFi but that seemed terribly slow so I thought I would cable them and see what happens. No improvement - maybe even worse performance - except that wirelessly it would eventually crap out with a 519 error and would never get a complete backup. Any ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks / Hal

    client backup failure

Using version 7.0.326 Windows XP on both machines. Backup machine is a dell dimension. Client laptop is a toshiba satalite, both running WinXP. I seem to be able to manually backup the Toshiba but when I try to have it automatically back it up I get a "Can't access volume SQ003914 © on Janestoshiba, error -1017 (insufficient permissions)." Any idea why this is happening? Any suggestions or solutions would be most appreciated. I thought it might be the power settings but they are set to only power down the monitor, never the disk or the system when it is plugged in. And obviously since I can do the backup manually the permissions are properly set for the most part. Thanks for any help. The log from my succesful backup shows that it lacks permission for a number of files, mostly system stuff. Is that normal? recreate catalog from rdb files

Waltr: Thank you, thank you, thank you, ..... thank you. It is doing the catalog right now. I guess this needs to be more explicit in the manual and someone should put it in the knowledge base. Let me know if there is every anything I can do for you. Seriously. Thanks again. Hal hlamster@gmail.com
