    Retrospect 8.1 - transaction error

Hi Mayoff, I understand that. I don't think Retrospect Inc appreciates the time and internal cost it takes to manually upgrade a small network with just 50 users and around 30 servers. When is the final release due? Richard
  2. So since upgrading to 8.1 (Windows - which is effectively a bunch of patches) I have been seeing this error: 27/12/2012 23:57:35: Connected to Demo Server 2 (edgedemo02) ncwnLoaderDLTask: service file "msvcr100.dll" download failed, error -523 ( service transaction error) Can't access backup client Demo Server 2 (edgedemo02), error -523 ( service transaction error) The only solution seems to be a manual uninstall and reinstall process, adding the client back in again, then adding it back into all the scripts manually - not ideal! Anyone else seeing this? Not seen any Asset errors yet though, thankfully! and the 'file not found' errors I get when backing up have now gone. However.. during backups I see things like "6GB remaining, operation complete" which concerns me that files are now being missed, or there is a disconnect between that counter and the newly filtered out files in 8.1. I'll raise it with support, but 8.1 is a good step forward in reliability, I think...! Richard
  3. Would be great with home workers to have compression of backed up data to save on bandwidth... of course, it would also be great as requested before to have clients pinging the server, as quite often in remote networks there's a NAT between internal and remote networks. Symantec give you the choice with Endpoint... Richard
  4. The Client config on RS 8.1 Server is getting messy and there seems to be a mix of information, security and client permission tick boxes now which I think need tidying up. Richard

Inplace Update from 7.7 to 8.0

Yes to both. You need the 8.0 clients to work with RS 8.0 Server. You can install over the top, but make sure you rebuild your catalog files on all backup sets before trying to use them in anger. Also, I'd HIGHLY recommend you get the 8.1 update for both server and client, else it'll crash every time you try and groom a backup set! NOTE: The 8.1 client (which fixes some bugs doesn't NOT have an upgrade file, so you will need to manually install all clients on your network - rather than pushing an update to all connected clients) Useful link: http://kb.retrospect.com/articles/en_US/Retrospect_Article/grx-assert/?l=en_US&fs=Search&pn=1 I hope that helps... RS8 Asset crashes when grooming

Yes it did stop the crashing, thanks. I do wonder how this go through internal testing without crashing though... Richard
  7. Apparently there is a fix on the way for this, but I thought everyone should know... + Executing Grooming at 24/12/2012 11:16 (Execution unit 1) Grooming Backup Set PSTBackups... Assert occurred on 24/12/2012 at 11:17:30 + Retrospect version 8.0.0 (199) Launched at 24/12/2012 11:20 in user account UK\******** + Executing Grooming at 24/12/2012 11:22 (Execution unit 1) Grooming Backup Set PSTBackups... Assert occurred on 24/12/2012 at 11:23:43 Trying to groom the same backup set containing PST files from my client machines. Keeps crashing, so unless a catalog rebuild fixes this, my data is all lost. You would have thought after all this time using the same backup format, a corrupt backup set/catalog would be handled pretty well.. I should point out, RS8 seems to behave better when using clean backup sets (i.e. not from an RS7.7 installation), but it still fails way more often than it should. Richard

    Retrospect 8.1 - transaction error

David; can you get an upgrade file out for the 8.1 client? You seriously can't expect us to uninstall/reinstall on 50+ client machines and 40 servers one-by-one, after just upgrading them all to 8.0 a few weeks back? At least if there is an upgrade installer I can choosr the updater and push it to the attached clients. Incidentally, one of the things I recommended years back, was that the RS admin can choose which machines/groups are upgraded - rather than ALL clients upgrade at the same time. Richard

    backing up a Linkstation NAS

If the Buffalo NAS allows root access to it via SSH (via an add-on) you can install the Retrospect Linux client (7.6 I think) which will work. We backup a couple of Netgear ReadyNAS devices this way... although, Retrospect don't exactly keep the linux client up to date, so there's no modern features like Instant Scan or a GUI available. Richard
  10. Hi David; My logs were from our CVS server, which is backed up at 8pm via a script and no developers are making changes to the file structure. Some of these errors include the follow - certainly not temporary files, but may have potentially been changed during the working day. Frequent crashes from elem.cpp-1138 assertion

Pre-release (8.1) actually seems to work much better... I can actually do backups! Richard
  12. I'd advise people skip 8.0 and go straight to 8.1. The latter version doesn't crash nightly for a start. On a clean backup set grooming seems to work fine too, although I'm not completely convinced Instant Scan is actually backing up ALL my data, which is worrying! :s I agree that users shouldn't be paying for bug fixes, there are some new features though, some of these new features actually work too! Richard

    ISA data file is dirty

Thanks David. For anyone reading this, just stop the "Retrospect Instant Scan" service and then delete the RetroISAScans folder from C:\ProgramData\RetroISA (in Windows) I did contact support, but was told to remove and reinstall the client! Cheers, Richard

Attached error you get when refreshing details in RS Server - same as when trying to run a 7.7 client with 8.0.

    Retrospect 8 opinion?

Thank heavens for that... I think someone jumped the gun by releasing RS8 in this condition - it's done nothing to reassure people about improving reliability now Retrospect Inc is at the reins.. I do hope you're eating your own dog food in-house and haven't been able to do backups/grooms since upgrading too (it's a touch annoying/stressful) Rich

    Frequent crashes from elem.cpp-1138 assertion

I get this nightly using RS 8.0 Multi Server - seems to be groom related. It's a shame when you need more intensive backups for your backup system than the systems we're trying to protect with it... Rich
  18. No. although, I haven't tried transferring my backup sets (created in 7.7) to a new one yet... using existing backups sets which have these errors still plays up under RS8 Rich

    Retrospect 8 opinion?

Yeah I've seen more issues: - In the history tab in the client, there doesn't seem to be anything in there.. - If you're connected to a VPN with full network access, the RS client cannot populate any information about when last backed up etc - Getting a lot of 'network communication failed' when it drops out a backup (these are on static servers which show no signs of problems doing any other process) - Doesn't seem to save the RS config until you close the application, so if it crashes you have to re-add any clients and make any config changes since it was last launched (probably after it crashed last time) - All backups have sometimes hundreds of errors in them from RS not being able to backup temporary files in c:\windows or Symantec or somewhere else - didn't have an issue under 7.7! - When opening a large backup set (2M files, ~750GB) it'll freeze, "not responding" for a while, then come back to life - shocking behaviour after so many years with people putting up with this fault (of course, sat at 25% CPU). You can't click between tabs without it starting the freezing process all over again. - You STILL can't delete more than one snapshot at a time, so removing a few old laptops from a large backup set takes an age... - Lack of Win 2000 support not great, considering they can easily write code to use the old 7.7 mechanism to continue supporting it... Like I said earlier, same old product, now with a couple more features that don't work properly. Richard

    Retrospect 8 opinion?

Ok, this this isn't going well. So, I can't get RS 8 client installed on our Exchange 2003 Server, it complains about permission errors when trying to start the service... no Exchange backups, no RS 8! I've had a proactive backup hang on 'building snapshot" and other servers have thrown all kinds of errors: - 13/12/2012 18:30:18: Copying Local Disk (C:) on File Server 2 (VM) Using Instant Scan File "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log": can't read, error -1101 ( file/directory not found) File "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataStore.edb": can't read, error -1101 ( file/directory not found) File "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\edb.chk": can't read, error -1101 ( file/directory not found) File "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\edb.log": can't read, error -1101 ( file/directory not found) File "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\edb00079.log": can't read, error -1101 ( file/directory not found) File "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\edb0007A.log": can't read, error -1101 ( file/directory not found) File "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\edb0007B.log": can't read, error -1101 ( file/directory not found) File "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\edb0007C.log": can't read, error -1101 ( file/directory not found) (loads more under this) Looks like I may have to roll back tomorrow to 7.7... VMware Agent

I think you'll still need a VMware licence to allow Retrospect to connect to the Vmware data stores... The VMware agent (to my knowledge) is just a way of centralising backups in Retrospect, but you still need the Data Protection feature available. Richard
  23. I've recently been finding Exchange 2003 failing to back up on our network so have initiated an uninstall > reinstall of the client (V. 7.5.116) to try and fix the issue. Now, as our Exchange server is used all night and day I'm not in a position to try and clear this with a reboot, so I'm hoping there is an alternative! As I reinstalled the client from scratch I have had to add the new client back into the list of Client in Retrospect. Merely adding the client caused Retrospect to freeze. Once I crashed out of Retrospect and looked in my clients list the new client was there, although it again crashed whenever I try to view the volumes with "Can't track volumes, error -523 (service transaction error)! This isn't great news. Has anyone else had this issue and is a reboot the ONLY option open to me from here? Rich
  24. No, it's not enough to just backup the Exchange mailbox - there is finite space available and staff need to archive some of their emails, yet keep it on their local machine in case they need to reference it (i.e. for projects/client info). With delta backups in place, this PST hit (and storage space!) would be significantly reduced.

    Retrospect 8 Deduplication Questions

Yes, nothing has changed at all in the dedupe features - I had rather hoped that Delta backups would be in v8 as just about every other backup solution has been supporting this for 5 years now. It's a shame really.. many of the features of v8 really should have been in the product 5 years ago Rich
