  1. Nice trick to get rid of issues: start a new Forum without porting the old messages. Groom still fails (7.7.562) the same way as before (see thread "Grooming misery" 'forum.dantz.com' 'Server, SBS and Multi Server' started on 1 November 2010) Grooming misery For some years now Grooming "Disk Backup Sets" starts damaging the Backup Set. First a new "Disk Backup Set" is created (on a newly formatted, NTFS (NOT compressed) hard disk). After the Backup Set reaches its limit, errors start to appear. These range from ".. you must recreate the Backup Set's Catalog" to Assert errors. Sometimes a "Catalog repair" solves the issue. An example: + Executing Hamlet Groom (HDx) at 18/05/2011 13:19 (Execution unit 1) Grooming Backup Set Server (HD2)... Groomed zero KB from Backup Set Server (HD2). Assertion Failure At "elem.cpp-1138"

In my opinionthe situation is far worse then the lack of free support: For someyears now, there hasn’t been any significant upgrade to the Retrospect forWindows Single/Multi Server edition! I did payfor support, even so they failed to solve the issues. Roxio support even confirmedthat these problems are there (Grooming and corrupt Preferences/Settings). Last year (22November 2010) I started a thread called “Has Retrospect Server a future?” (oldforums). ARetrospect support team member reacted on 26 February 2011: “Everyone reallyneeds to relax…” and “We do have a Windows release that is actually done and ondeck for release very soon. I can't really give you more detail beyond that.” Fulco
  4. Our systemis also suffering from “elem.cpp-11” errors (see thread “Assertion Failure Atelem.cpp-1138”). The frequencybetween crashes is decreasing, and is now 3 days. Retrospectis becoming unusable. Thesuggesting from support, removing the “config.dat” file, and recreating allsettings is not an option.

Please Roxio, change the way Retrospect save's is Preferences to a 'portable' system. For example use XML file!!! Fulco

    Assertion Failure At "elem.cpp-1138"

The crashednow happens on average one’s a week. Roxiosupport replied: The “module.cpp-1138” error is not the same as the one fixed in the ‘Readme’ (RET-235: Fixed acrash (elem.cpp-1138 assert) that could occur when Retrospect sent a cleaningcycle command to a tape library while another operation was running.") fromthe latest Retrospect. They suggesteda standard trouble shooting protocol: - CheckWindows event log for corresponding errors - Save theconfig77.dat file in a save place, and start Retrospect without the configfile, so that Retrospect creates a new config file. - Test startingin Windows Safe mode Due to the ‘low’frequencies of the error this is not possible: I can’t pinpoint the error to aBackup Set, Backup type, Script…. AND: creatingal the settings from scratch is NOT an option (Scripts, Backup Sets …. ) PleaseRoxio, change the way Retrospect save’s is Preferences to a ‘portable’ system. For exampleuse XML file!!! Config77.dat File Getting Corrupted

A damagedconfig file is an long-standing Retrospect problem. For manyyears Retrospect users are requesting a better, more stable configurationsystem. In the‘old’ forum this was discussed many times. PersonallyI don’t understand why they still use this ‘monolith’ config.dat file.

    Assertion Failure At "elem.cpp-1138"

In a readme file from the latest Retrospect version(7.7.562) this error is mentioned: "RET-235: Fixed a crash (elem.cpp-1138 assert) thatcould occur when Retrospect sent a cleaning cycle command to a tape librarywhile another operation was running." However I don't have a 'tape Library', just to separateLTO (LTO3 & LTO4) tape units. And I am running version 7.7.562! And I used the tool supplied by the manufacturer to checkthe units. No errors/warning are found. Fulco
  9. We are experiencingthe same problem: Grooming doesn’t work, even worse it damages the catalog files Over aperiod of a year, I contacted Roxio several times. None of theiradvice didn’t make the problem go away. See forumthread: “Retrospect Small Business Server Premium Grooming Misery”
  10. From Roxio support: Grooming is a destructive process. Grooming every twoweeks would be considered too often and can potentially cause missing files, corruption, and further problems with the program when attempting to continueusing the backup set. From kb 4) Don't groom too often. Grooming will automaticallyremove data when the destination disk fills up. If you want to make sure thedisk never fills, create a grooming script (Automate>Manage Scripts>New)to run once a week. Grooming every day is typically not needed. It says 'once a week'. And, I do have a disk based backup set, that wasn'tgroomed at all. The grooming started, automatically, when the backup setreached its limits. There is definitely something wrong with the Groomingprocess. Fulco
  11. There isonly one Retrospect ‘Server’ in our network. Disablingthe Anti-virus software is not an option!
  12. Can't access volume Windows7 (C:) on WORKSTATION, error -505 ( backup client reserved) Error (This happens every few days): + Normal backup using Computers Proactive (Hard Disk Backup Set) at 21/02/2011 14:20 (Execution unit 2) To Backup Set Workstations... I did contacted support in the past about this irritating behaviour. They responded: "This Issue, is beyond our control. There is functionality within Windows to white list certain applications to eliminate the UAC prompt" Observations: ERROR: if there is CPU/Disk activity during the "Interactive Services Detection" message NO ERROR: if during the "Interactive Services Detection" there is no other (significant?) CPU/Disk activity. AFTER the "Interactive Services Detection" message is gone, it doesn't matter what the Workstation is doing. Fulco
  13. All clientsare ‘shutdown’ every day. The server hasn’tcrashed in ages. In our casethis isn’t the issue.
  14. Thanks forthe tips. However: - Mac OS XRetrospect Clients doesn’t have a Priority option - the Priorityon the Vista computers is already set to the highest setting - currentlytesting Windows 7 PCs on higher settings Fulco
