  1. hi which is the latest RH linux client. The website lists: Retrospect Client for Red Hat Linux 6.5.108 2003-7-8 but the version 7 download has: retroclient-70.rpm 2004-12-13 (RH reports this verson as 7.0.108) are these the same version with a name change ? regards simon

Any way to just verify files already backed up?

howard, I didn't say I do an ERASE..that was philx509.... If i do a normal backup AFTER the first 'forgotton verify' backup it will only verify the NEW backed up files. I want to verify that the files I have on tape are good. I don't want to have to back the whole lot up again to verify. I can think of loads of reasons why a seperate PROPER verify would be good...... I do backups that take 8 hours...and 8 hours verifying...sometimes there isn't time to do the verify because I need to do some other backup/restore..I should be able to go back and do the verify afterwards. I have data online that doesn't change and is backed up on tape. Recently I needed to restore from tape and one of the restored files was corrupt....this makes me paranoid - I want to verify the rest of the tapes to check.. shall I go on ? I think that software should work in the way we, the users, want. I don't want to have to tie a piece of string around my finger ! Just because you don't find a feature useful or appealling doesn't mean others don't si

Any way to just verify files already backed up?

I think a verify would be a useful feature. What if i've just done a backup and forgot the verify option ? si
  4. i've seen this before...i've found a refresh (on the page that lists the scsi ids) to bring it back. Seems to not do this in 7.0 si
  5. hi i'm using dell dual 2.8 xeon. 2 gig memory RS v7.0 using overland lto2 library. Pretty similar spec to you and I'm getting up to 2500 MB/s (average about half that). Files are coming across a gig network from multiterrabyte raids with million(s) of files ranging in size from 100k to gigs. Using an old ait1 drive I seem to remember getting speeds similar to yours so there is something that is adrift with your system. I would look at the scsi config (try another card - try disabling the raid if you can -etc) I do seem to remember backing up loads of fonts (tiny file sizes) did impact the performance. What happens if you use NTbackup to backup the files. si
  6. http://forums.dantz.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=multiserver&Number=52349 works on 6.5 and 7.0 (windows) cos i've done it. ..i'm sure it worked on 6.0 too (it's in the manual). si PS this would probably be best posted in one of the other forums - this is for advanced tape support !
  7. Move them to where you want them....then double click them to open them up in retrospect. Retrospect then remembers this new location. si
  8. hi... sorry i didn't check the link (just a cut and paste !). Doesn't seem to be a KB article number for it...go to http://kb.dantz.com/ search for exchange and it's the 4th FAQ "How should Exchange 5.5 be setup so Retrospect 6.5 can access the server? ". This worked for me with a similar setup to yours (two domains/two servers/retrospect 6.5 and exhange 5.5) BUT I suspect that what the sales rep says might be correct. I think that single server only allows you to backup one windows server on your network (which i assume is the one running retropspect (the local server ?) - whether you are backing that up or not !) Is it possible to download a multiserver trial of retrospect ? to see if this helps. si
  9. I have to agree with GoAWest on this one....the logic behind this is stupid. I can't see any reason why retrospect should decide what is a serious or major error. If the single file you need backing up isn't backed up then that's a ' major error' in my view. si
  10. hi, i struggled to get this working too. Didn't have any licences errors but had problems with permissions/authentication..but following: http://kb.dantz.com/display/2/index.asp?c=&cpc=&cid=&cat=&catURL=&r=0.3291284 fixed it. Hope it helps. si

    incorrect media request

thanks for your reply.... there isn't a barcode for 27 as it doesn't exist yet. It is certainly confusing tape 17 with tape 27 - but I don't think it is a barcode reader issue. All the barcodes look correct (and are unique). I put in a call to Dantz tech support and they suggested that the catalog was corrupt. I did a catalog rebuild from an earlier tape (tape 14) and tried the backup again. This time it asked for tape 15 to continue to append to. I put in tape 15 and it wouldn't allow it (it still had data on from the previous backups). I was allowed to mark tape missing and replace. I replaced it with another tape and then got the ridiculous "too different from other media" error message. (it is exactly the same tape!) I am trying to rebuild the catalog from the previous tape and keeping my fingers crossed. si
  15. bit of an odd one..... I've been doing our daily incremental backup and RS seems to have got confused (or at least I have !). This is currently on 17 tapes (labeled 1 to 17 -incremental 1 in usual RS style). I have another 9 (18 to 26) erased/labeled/added _to_backup set loaded in the library. All these tapes are barcoded and RS seems to know what they all are . When I want to run the backup it is asking for new media. It is requesting a tape 27 (with the same barcode as tape 17) - my only real option is to click choices.....skip or missing. If I set the tape missing (RS thinks this is 27 that I have set missing) then tape 17 shows as missing in 'backup sets...properties'. If I choose skip then I am asked to put in a new tape 28. I can see that tapes 18 to 26 are present...show as erased.....and are defined as being part of the backup set (all barcodes are correct). this backup set is getting pretty big (1.6 gig) - but it has been working fine so far. suggestions anyone ? si win2k3 server - latest versions of retrospect/driver
  16. Strangely enough I just been having the same problems with HP ultrium 2 drive in our overland library. After working fine for months it generated the same error. I gave it a clean (the first in a year !) - It worked ok for a few hours then generated the error again. I risked one more clean but it kept happening for about a week. This has now happened with quite a few tapes so I am sure it is the drive not the tape that is having the problems. After a bit of research seemed to be some issue with cleaning tapes and early versions of the firmware on HP ultrium drives .... http://support.overlandstorage.com/jive/entry!default.jspa?categoryID=7&entryID=2074&fromSearchPage=true ....and after call to Overland tech support I flashed latest firmware. Still no joy so Overland have sent me a replacement drive, which I have just fitted. I am fairly convinced that problem will disappear - but it doesn't help pinpoint the issue. My guess (?) is that the drive generates a 'clean me' message when it has problems reading/writing/verifying tapes. In this instance the drive is so dirty/worn that a cleaning tape isn't effective enough so the message comes back - or the firmware of the drive isn't resetting the tape error count properly so that it thinks that it is always on the verge of needing a clean.....just guesses So problem lies with drive not retrospect (which is a first !) si (latest retrospect and rdu build)
  17. one further thing..... a mail from Larry Zulch - President & CEO of Dantz http://list.dantz.com/pipermail/retro-talk/2003-December/005502.html seems to explain dantz's view on the matter. si
  18. Hi, I am thinking of using one of our Overland Storage Neo Series 2000 LTO-2 tape libraries with Retrospect 6.5 MS - I am struggling to find out if you can run multiple backup streams to a single drive (with or without ATS) although I realise you can run multiple streams concurrently to seperate drives or disks. The reason I am asking is that using Arkeia I can get nearly 3000MB/min sustained out of a single drive (LTO-2) - using multiple streams across the network. Each single stream is far slower than this (1/3 to 1/10 ). If Retrospect can only write one stream at once to this single drive then it will be far too slow to use the drive effectively. Alternatively are there any other ways of using Retrospect to get the maximum performance of the drive (we are talking about 3TB of data for a full backup so copying data locally is not an option). regards simon
  19. Lennart has my point exactly - I could add another drive to our library ($$$) meaning I can backup approx twice as much data in the same time frame - but I am still only using a small percentage of the tape drives capability. If I have buy two drives then I would be wasting even more money. I would be better buying slower/cheaper tape drives. I am not sure that the manual says is possible however. I read the manual as saying multiple backup units to different destinations (multiple drives if you buy ATS). Which is what natew and amy (and powermeck) are saying. I agree, however, that multiple backup units are useless for situations where you only have one tape drive (no matter how fast !) in your system. I realise this limitation but I think that it is quite poor for an enterprise class product. As I mentioned before this implies that retrospect will not really be ideal for fast tape drives especially in network environment. Other software (www.arkeia.com) does this effectively meaning I can backup nearly 3 times faster with the same hardware. I suggest that this is something that Dantz should take a look at - tape drives are getting faster all the time. I hate to use message boards for whingeing but it does seem that Dantz's response seems to be of the 'buy more drives' variety - not 'maximise what you have'. si
  20. thanks for your reply, In that case is there any decent way to maximise performance with a high speed drive. Even a backup from a local drive could be a lot slower than the tape drive speed if the server is quite busy (as ours are most of the time) and certainly most network backups are far slower than this in my experience. I can't really see how retrospect can take advantage of the speed of these devices without doing multiple streams - or am I missing something ? regards simon

    time of email notification

Mike, thanks for that - summertime ended this weekend, back to GMT - so problem has gone away !! - If I get a chance to fiddle I will install blat and report back. regards simon
  22. a very trivial point..but when I select email notification from retrospect it seems like the email is being sent with an incorrect date stamp, that is it doesn't seem to be taking account of daylight saving time. This means I receive the email an hour before it is sent ! here's a bit from the header Received: from xyx.com ([123.123.123.123] helo=XYZ) by xyz.com with smtp (Exim 3.35 #1) id 1A9MZI-0003Yg-0U for simon@xyz; Tue, 14 Oct 2003 11:38:20 +0100 Date: Tue, 14 Oct 03 11:38:20 +0000 To: simon@xyz.com From: retrospect@xyz.com Subject: Retrospect notification from XYZ (14/10/2003) MAILER-TRACE: 0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=3D"ISO-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Mime-Version: 1.0 Message-Id: <E1A9MZI-0003Yg-0U@xyz.com> X-RCPT-TO: <simon@xyz.com> all machines are on daylight saving time. time of email notification

Mikee, just trying to make sense of your mail. I assume that you are saying that 'external application' is the smtp server, if not I am not sure what the 'external application' is. the SMTP server is my ISP's - at this point I don't want to install an mailserver on this machine. As a test I did a command line mail via this smtp mailserver (telnet port 25 etc). This came up with the correct time stamp - so the finger of suspicion is still pointing at retrospect (?) si
  24. hiya, will give that a go - but I have used a 'burn in' memory tester which stressed the memory for a few hours and didn't give any errors at all. regards simon
  25. Hiya, been having problems with getting retrospect to do a backup. Having spent the last week struggling I thought I'd give the forum a go. Just trying to do an initial backup and every time retrospect crashes out with a problem. I am attempting to backup about 300 gig (296,095 files) onto AIT-1. The files are local to the machine - The backup starts fine and I sometimes get the the 3rd or 4th AIT tape (estimating about 8/9 to complete) before it bombs out. various errors including: assertion errors in: module.cpp-457 assertion errors in: elem.cpp-661 various access violations ran out out memory (!?!) The machine has been running fine otherwise (just fileserving). Clean windows 2003 server install - no other software apart from retrospect. Done an extensive memory test (all ok). Ran Sandra burn in test overnight (all ok). Done check-disk (all ok). I do reboots between retrospect falling over. CPU is cruising at about 5% during write to tape operation. So far I have tried: - pulling it off the network for the duration of the backup, incase writing to the disk was causing the problem. - installing ASPI (is that compatible with win2k3 server ?) - used the 4.6 release shipping with retrospect and the 4.7 release from adaptec. (using 4.6 made retrospect use aspi (still crashed) and complain about the CD writer on the machine- using 4.7 retrospect went back to NT passthrough ?) - tried with verification off (never gets to the verification stage so I don't think it's that) - tried with "copy security settings" off - disable the tape drive in device manager. It takes about 2 1/2 hours per AIT and sometimes crashes 10 hours in, so it is getting very time-intensive to sort out. Been throught the FAQs and knowledgebase but coming up blank Machine spec: win2003 server Retrospect v6.5.319 multi-server sony ait-1 drive/adaptec 2940u2w scsi card 768Mb memory data drive is on adapec 1200A raid controller netgear 302 gigabit card (tried swapping this for a 3com, still falls over). any suggestions what to do next. simon
