  1. Hello, I keep 2 local backups. A daily proactive backup to a NAS drive and a monthly manual backup to a HDD which I keep offline most of the time. Occasionally I perform a restore test by restoring a single file to a new location. This normally works but has not worked today. Here below is a list of the work I have done so far to solve this problem but I have not resolved the issue. Please help. WORK SO FAR: Chose a recent file: CCStatements-230813.pdf Can it be restored from the 20/08/2023 HDD Backup: Didn't seem to work! Try the same file from the Nas_Daily_4 backup set: Didn't work as well Check for Updates: Retrospect is up to date. ver 18.5.3.142 Check for Windows Updates: 2 .Net Framework updates required. Now up to date Windows Version: 10 Pro Ver 22H2 Build 19045.3324 Rebooted Try a restore from the HDD with no other apps running: Restore did not happen although the History Log said "Execution Completed Successfully". Destination directory is empty.
  2. Should Proactive Backups run when Retrospect is running as a service? They don't appear to. I have 3 proactive backups that only run if the full Retrospect is running on my PC. They are scheduled to run anytime . See screen shots attached. I have notification emails set up and I can see that Retrospect is automatically launched now and then but it closes down in the same minute that it runs. Why does it do this? This is on Windows 10 with Retrospect 16.
  3. Spoke too soon, Retrospect are still looking into this. Here is Retrospect Article detailing a number of issues with Onedrive: https://www.retrospect.com/en/support/kb/scanning_incomplete_1103
  4. I raised a Support ticket yesterday and had a dialogue with someone by email. However, when I said what I found, the support went into limbo. I've had no further messages from the Support Engineer.
  5. Thanks David, After spending some time messing around I have the following behaviour from Retrospect 16 with Windows 10 Pro 1903 I have all of my Onedrive files saved on my PC on a D:\ drive 1. I can backup my Onedrive folders to a USB HDD (Seagate) 2. I cannot use Retrospect to create Sub-Volumes inside my Onedrive folder (where my life is stored i.e in D:\Onedrive) 3. I can use Retrospect to create Sub-Volumes outside my Onedrive folder (i.e. in D:\Myfolder) 4. I can restore files from my Retrospect Seagate backup set to the newly created Sub-Folder outside of my Onedrive folder This is all a bit scary but I am wondering if Retrospect has deliberately defeated the possibility of writing to a Onedrive folder because it would then be possible overwrite a good Onedrive folder with a blank backup set which would then be picked up by Onedrive and erased online too. This would be catastrophic. See this post in a recent thread. This might happen if you use a laptop as well as a PC as I do. My laptop has limited disk space and so I make use of File on Demand. This means that only a few useful files are local and the rest of my filing system is online. A backup of THAT Onedrive folder would only be a partial set and if restored to its original location it would be picked up by Onedrive and all non local files would disappear from Onedrive in the Microsoft cloud as well as on my PC. Have I got this right? If I have got this right then we need to be EXTRA CAREFUL with Retrospect Restores into original Onedrive folders If any Retrospect Personnel are reading this, could you please confirm my suspicions. Actually, I have just found this in the Retrospect Manual: "Windows Customers: If you are using OneDrive and would like to perform a bare metal recovery (BMR) on a Windows April 2018 Update system, you need to uncheck the option for "Files On-Demand" during backup. Otherwise, the restore will put a blank folder for your OneDrive data, and that empty folder will be synced to the cloud, erasing any cloud files you may have." SO BE VERY CAREFUL!!
  6. Hello, I have just discovered that I can't restore a file to a new location. I select a volume that is already in existence called Onedrive. Then I select "Add Folders" I then get a list of folders that don't appear to actually exist and I cannot see my actual folders. This is not the case if I choose "Configure Volumes" Here I can see all of my folders and files but I'm unable to create a sub volume here. This occurred under R15. I have now upgraded to R16 but I still have the problem. Is this because it is a Onedrive folder? In my case I configure my Onedrive folder to all be present on my Hard Drive. I'm pretty sure that my backup is OK but I was just wanting to do a restore of a single file. Please help because this is making Retrospect unusable for me. I'm using Windows 10 nd R16 Thanks
  7. Hello, I have decided to change the way I do Retrospect backups. I will use Windows 10 "Files On Demand" on my laptop so that I can see the online files as well as the local files. This is useful to me. My laptop is synchronised with my desktop PC which has ALL my files stored locally AND in Onedrive. There is therefore no need to use FOD on this machine. I will use Retrospect on my desktop machine only. This way I have a full Retrospect backup of the PC. There is no need to do a full backup on the laptop since they are synchronised with the PC. However, I would urge Retrospect to ensure that R12 works with Windows 10 fully, including FOD.
  8. OK, I've worked this one out. I knew the answer from ages ago but forgot about it. It is one of the idiosyncrasies of Retrospect that it will sometimes open a window off screen. I don't know why, but it happens from time to time and it has done so for many versions, going back for years. It can be easily adjusted by simply clicking WIndow>Arrange All. Simple, but you have to realise what it's done first...irritating little wrinkle.
  9. Hello, As a long term retrospect user I've just downloaded Retrospect 12 trial, prior to buying it for use on a Windows 10 PC. I have run my first backup successfully. Now I need to back up another partition on this PC. I can't do it. I press the backup button but nothing happens! If I press the "Duplicate" or "Disaster Recovery Button" It does something. What's wrong? Windows 10 version 1703 OS build 15063.729 Retrospect 12.6.1.101
  10. Thanks. I have a further and rather irritating problem now. When you turn Onedrive FOD off, Onedrive insists on downloading the whole file system stored in the cloud. This is not possible for me because there is far more material than this Surface Pro PC can hold so I can't do it! It is impossible to switch FOD off, once it has been switched on! I am unable to return to the situation before I switched FOD on. I have an open forum post about this in Microsoft Communities but I'm not confident of a useful outcome. As far as I can see (unless anyone has a better idea) I will have to perform a clean installation of the laptop so that I can select the files I need most from the Onedrive cloud. Of course all my files are also kept on my larger desktop PC. Not a good situation, but I can't run Retrospect until I've solved this problem...
  11. I raised a problem ticket for this problem: Here is the dialogue so far: Agent Response: Hi Retrospect will not see any files that are not stored locally on the hard drive. We do not currently have the ability to support the FOD setting. If you right click on your OneDrive, and choose "settings" you should be able to disable this option. We are investigating the possibility of adding FOD support for OneDrive in the future. Please let us know if you have any additional questions, The Retrospect Support Team MY RESPONSE: Thank you for your response. However the situation is not as you think. When FOD is invoked in Onedrive, many files are resident locally on my PC. Others are online only. Retrospect can deal with none of them it seems, neither the Online files or the permanently offline files. I will turn FOD off and see if Retrospect 12 springs into action.
  12. Thank you. However I have downloaded latest free the free trial of Retrospect (12.6.1.101) and it still doesn't work. Is this a limitation of Retrospect? A screenshot of the preview pane is attached showing the Onedrive file structure still unticked. It cannot be ticked manually. Any further comments gratefully received.
  13. In the last week I have installed the Fall Creator's Update on one of my two PCs. I am a user of Microsoft Onedrive so that I can keep my files in the cloud and also keep my 2 PCs synchronised. I also perform a monthly backup of both PCs to a hard disk drive using Retrospect. This is so that I can keep a reasonably current file set offline where Ransomware is less likely to get at it. On the Updated PC I have invoked the new Windows Explorer "Files on Demand" service, which allows online files to be visible in Windows Explorer. They can exist as permanently local as well as online, temporarily local as well as online or only online. The other PC does not have FOD. I have found that Retrospect will no longer back up my Onedrive folders on the PC with FOD invoked. During the backup dialogue in the Preview Pane, the Onedrive folders remain unselected (by a tick/flag) and I am not able select it manually. I am still able to back up my Onedrive folders on the other PC which does not have the Fall Creator's Update. Is this the expected functionality for Retrospect? This is a real problem for me so I hope this problem can be resolved. Has anyone else experienced this? PC1: Windows 10 Ver 1703 Build 15063.726 PC2: Windows 10 Pro Version 1709 Build 16299.64 I use Retrospect Ver 11.5.0.190
  14. Hello, I have Retrospect version 11 running on Windows 10. I back up to a NAS drive every day, proactively and Groom once a week proactively. Right now I have an error message "Sorry server login failed, error 1019 (not enough resources) Please try using Explorer to Connect" I am able to access this drive via Explorer and there is plenty of space on the drive. The problem is that I am stuck in an infinite loop: I OK the message but it just pops right back...I can't get out of it. I can't even stop Restrospect except by use of the Windows Task Manager. What's the problem? How do I get out of this loop? Thanks
  15. Thanks. I did upgrade. But also I started again with fresh backup sets and I also ensure that there is plenty of space left on my NAS. A white paper I read said to leave at least 500MB free! So far so good but I do occasionally have network issues with the NAS. When this happens I can see the NAS via its web interface but Windows 10 reports that the drive is unavailable even though it is reported in the Map Network Drive/Browse dialogue. Windows sees it well enough to list it as a network drive but reports it as unavailable for some daft reason.
