Retrospect 8 Engine won't start

Hi.

I have installed version 8 on a 2009 model Mac Pro. We have successfully performed a back-up to an HP Ultrium 1760 tape drive. Now the Retrospect Engine won't start. When I click on the start button in the Engine Application in System Preferences (inputting 127.0.0.1 & admin password as we have the console & engine on the same machine) nothing happens. It stills says the engine is stopped. In the console I get 127.0.0.1 & the lightning bolt on the left, with Not Connected displayed on the right.

I have updated both console & engine to version 8.1.526 but the problem persists. Any ideas?

Cheers!

This sounds the same as part of my problem, posted in another thread. The engine regularly died and would not start. Someone suggested going to the Terminal and entering:

sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.retrospect.launchd.retroengine.plist

After doing this, I am always able to Start the engine normally as you are trying to do.

Are you running the engine under 10.6.1?

I had an instance yesterday where everything was running along smoothly (this was on a test box) and I was doing manual backups of things and the engine just stopped.

No amount of trying to start from the PrefPane worked. After I rebooted, it came back up.

I haven't been able to reproduce that, though.

You will have first to stop the Retrospect engine by going to system preferences/Retrospect and clicking on "Stop Retrospect Engine"

Then, go to /Library/Application Support/Retrospect. You will find Config80.dat and Config80.bak. These are the corrupt files that Robin mentioned

You can rename these files or delete them. Deleting these files do not affect previous backups, but you will have to locate your catalog files, recreate your scripts,re enter your license code,re-add your clients and shares etc.

All of your data will be fine as long as your media set files are left alone.

After this is done, go back to system pref's and start retrospect engine.

  • 3 months later...

I've just run into this problem. My console log files are different though. The problem was fixed by running "sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.retrospect.launchd.retroengine.plist" in the Terminal as suggested.

I'm wondering why this keeps happening (3 times in 24 hours so far). The console & engine (latest versions) run on a MBP 15 OS X 10.6.2.

The System Preferences panel shows the engine to be stopped. Retrospect console can't contact the engine. Attempts to start the Engine in System Preferences give the following message in the system console:

7/01/10 20:38:21 authexec[813] executing /Library/PreferencePanes/RetrospectServer.prefPane/Contents/Resources/Retrospect

7/01/10 20:38:21 [0x0-0x6e06e].com.apple.systempreferences 2010-01-07 20:38:21.684 Retrospect[813:e07] Retro Prefs Pane Helper: start_server

The log is showing an error from launchd saying the launchd script is Already loaded. This is different from RetroEngine actually running.

Go to the terminal and type the following line of code to

unload the launchd script.

sudo launchctl unload

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.retrospect.launchd.retroengine.plist

Then go to the preference pane and start the engine.

I also am getting the engine not starting. (It was running and I was looking at some script rules from another machine and it suddenly showed it was disconnected. Looking on the server I saw the prefs showed the "Start engine" button indicating it was stopped. I pressed the start, entered the password and it it just stayed "Start Retrospect". I am running 10.6.2 on a OSX Quad core server. Here is the console....

1/9/10 4:20:18 PM authexec[42646] executing /Library/PreferencePanes/RetrospectServer.prefPane/Contents/Resources/Retrospect

1/9/10 4:20:18 PM [0x0-0x11b11b].com.apple.systempreferences 2010-01-09 16:20:18.637 Retrospect[42646:e07] Retro Prefs Pane Helper: start_server

1/9/10 4:20:19 PM [0x0-0x11b11b].com.apple.systempreferences com.retrospect.RetroEngine: Already loaded

Executing Robin's

sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.retrospect.launchd.retroengine.plist

Now allows it to start.

Retrospect just crashed again. I just added a new tape and turned on proactive backups, then it crashed.
