Migrate back-up to new script..

I have a back up script which has been running for several years now.  It has 25 LTO5 tapes in the back up set and sometimes when I try to retrieve files from it, it takes a flakey and grabs a random tape from another back up set and then merges it into the set I am retrieving from which is very bad for business.  So I want to continue with the back up as it has several TBs of data on the server still and ever growing, but when I make a new script and back up set not include everything that is already sitting on the server and backed up already!  Ideally, continue the back up with a new script and a new back up set, without doubling up existing data I have on tape already.

Is there an obvious solution to this I am missing?

You might want to investigate "Transferring BackupSets" the process has options for what you want to transfer. See User guide for details on this.

This would be easiest if you have two Drives, you can create a new backupset, and transfer snapshots into it.

If not you would need to transfer to a disk set first, then to tape.

If the 25 tapes is the only backup you have, you should REALLY perform a "Transfer backup set". :)

You should always have two alternating backup sets, one stored off site. Think fire, theft, flooding, hurricanes, you name it.

Thanks for all the advice, this is the secondary back-up that I am dealing with as the client has the original media and I am storing in a fireproof safe in the basement.

I have a new back up script ready, and I will export the snapshots into it with a new tape back up set.

If I use the transfer all snapshots function, does this alter the original snapshots in any way, IE, delete or modify them?  Am I copying them over and leaving the orignals untouched and copying to the new script?  Also, am I transfering any media over or is it just the snapshot database files?

Thanks

The transfer is a copy function, so the data on your source tapes will remain intact.

Depending on your plans for the source tapes you may want to consider the transfer options.

Transferring ALL snapshots will transfer the entire data of all 25 tapes, maybe not quite what you want.

If you want to Seed a new set of tapes to use going forward, and keep the Source tapes for history, then consider transferring the most recent snapshot.

This will have the effect of transferring the most recent full backup to your new backupset.

You can then start adding new backups to it, and only the changes will be updated.

I have an idea.  Start a new script and configure not to back up anything before the starting date of the new script.  It will then only back up newest files without and none of the existing files of the previous script and media.  If I need to recover or find anything from either of these sets, I can search both of them at the same time.
