Recycle Operation Ejects Disk with error

Have Retrospect 8 on Windows 2012 server with internal RD1000 drive.  Trying to do a recycle backup to new blank cartridge.  Retrospect says it is unrecognized media and I tell it to use it anyway. It starts the erase procedure, ejects the cartridge and then gives an error stating it reached the unexpected end of media.  Am I not supposed to do a recycle backup if the cartridge is brand new?

Has anyone run acrss this and do you have a fix? I'm trying to do this remotely after hours, so it's difficult to pop the cartridge back in.  I'll have to wait until I get back to the client's office in the morning.
