Run Retrospect 9.5 as a service

Hi all,

I searched a lot on the Web and on this forum but I didn't find out if Retrospect 9.5 can run as a service on a Windows machine (Windows Server 2008 R2).

I found only a few old posts on this forum stating that it cannot run as a service but I wonder if this feature has been added in the latest versions of the software.

As a matter of fact, we performed some tests and it does start as a service if a script is scheduled to run and no user is logged in but then when we log in and launch the Retrospect application we get an alert stating that it's run by another user and we have to kill the process so that we can access the Retrospect console again.

Is there a supported way to run Retrospect as a service?

Retrospect runs as an Application and not a Service.

When Retrospect Autolaunches, the program opens under the System account. Under Windows Vista or later, Windows will not allow the currently logged in user to view programs running under user accounts that are different from the currently logged in user account. Because of this, you are unable to view the Retrospect user interface when the program automatically opens for a scheduled backup.

The best workaround is to manually open Retrospect and leaving it running prior to a scheduled backup operation. This will give you full access to the user interface so that you can view what Retrospect is doing and troubleshoot any issues that may come up during a backup, such as a media request dialog box.

Thank you very much for replying Mayoff.

Since you said "Windows will not allow the currently logged in user to view programs running under user accounts that are different from the currently logged in user account", if we set Retrospect to run as a specified user and tick the "Run Retrospect in the Terminal Services section" checkbox, will we be able to view the user interface when Retrospect starts with no users logged in and then we log in with the aforementioned specified user?

It will eventually be addressed, but it requires a pretty large overhaul of the Retrospect design as it is now.

Really looking forward for this feature to come to life. We have mulitple backup admins now, we educate all of us not to log off the system. Once logged of, all backups will fail. Unfortunately this forces to look at other options for our backup solutions. We  hope to see this feature in the near future.

For what it's worth, sales has hinted to me for years (since v8 or earlier) that this was "maybe in the next release"... Ha! I think they are just trying to sell my clients ASM maintenance. I'm also a bit wary. V8 on Mac was the major overhaul on that platform, and now at v12 it still feels like beta to me.
