I also want to apologize if this is an easy answer as I recently inherited this system, and know virtually little of the backup process currently in use. I want to be able to create a new backup set that runs the first of every month and have the backup set labeled with the mm-yy. Then the first of next month create a new backup set with the previous months data, but keep in its entirety the previous backup as well. This way I will have 12 total backups after a years time. Right now I have my newly made script set to run on 1/1/2013 at 4am. Repeat 1 months on the 1st. And the action is set as New Backup Set. Will this work?
