Is it possible to verify that media member only? (member #88 out of 90)

(without going from the begining of the members)

Also, what action would you recommend after getting this error report?

thanks,

brad

Go to Media Sets, Members.

Mark #1 to #87 as "Lost" (checkmark at right).

Click "Verify".

After the verification, uncheck ALL the "Lost" checkmarks. (Important!)

Moving to a more reliable backup media than optical discs, such as hard drives.

Failing that, you don't need to do anything. If you want to be extra, extra secure, set disc #88 as "Lost" and run a backup. All files on that disc will be backed up again.

Q: what would happen if i marked one lost, did a re-backup to replace the files in the set, then marked that one un-lost? ;-)

Well, if you REALLY need to find out, create a new media set, run a backup that will fill (say) three discs. Mark one as lost, run a backup, unmark that one as lost and see what happens.

I'm sure Retrospect has a good way to handle that situation. :)

Hi,

I tried the "mark lost" method to verify only certain members. It does not work. Retro. still asks for member #1 on a verify. :-(

OT: Obviously, retro doesnt expect anyone to mark all member lost, so there is no way to simply "option-click" to set all to lost, and then uncheck the one you want to verify.

That makes doing this "verify" method (if it worked) a bit tedious, dont ya think?

Any other thoughts on how to verify one member of a set?

thanks,

b

any one from retrospect care to comment -

This is a user-to-user discussion. To get in contact with Retrospect support:

we are seeing this bug in 10.5. and it's more than a year after this bug was reported here.

What (exactly) is "this bug"? No bug has been "reported here" in this thread. Where is the thread where you have reported the bug?

We have many lost members and can not perform a verify.

Why/how have you lost your members?

Why can't you perform a verify? What happens? What error messages do you get?

Ive been getting that error or very sim. for a while now. Very infrequently.  I'm using version 9. generally I'll do a restore of the project I backed, just to make sure it works. I'm not sure, but a lot of odd caveates in Ret. have been since the begining. I dont really expect them to be fixed or dealt with. I find it a very rigid system by today's standards but I'll continue to use it untill something better emerges.

See post 5 for the bug. It also answers your last questions.

I felt it was important to post a comment on this outstanding bug - verifying backups is important to us and lost members are not unusual.

It also helps others to know that this is not unique to their installation. And it's not unusual to expect a company to review it's own websites

forum. Even if they do not post in it directly.

I am not as forgiving as "bradp015". This is a basic bug which could be fixed. Our mediasets are 10TB+, and verifification of part or all is a requirement. To rebackup is a major p.i.t.a.

Ufortunately the bug renders your technique for verifying only a select few members unworkable.

How/why members are lost - well it just happends, but for example a disk crashes, is erased, etc....

A bug is now reported in the bug report subforum.
